Emergency Procedures for Parents

Almaden Elementary School Emergency Procedures for Parents

These are the procedures that Almaden School will follow during an emergency situation. For more detailed information, please contact the Main Office at (408) 535-6207.

1. Incident-Based Evacuation
Students move out of their classrooms (after a minor earthquake, due to a fire, etc.) Students evacuate to their designated areas and await further instructions. Teachers have current rosters and will monitor students while the incident is resolved.

What parents should do: If an evacuation occurs close to dismissal at the end of the school day, special pickup instructions may be sent to parents through the school phone system, Almaden webpage, and Almaden PTA Facebook page. If no special instructions are sent, parents should plan to pick up their student normally (but should be prepared for abnormally high traffic).

2. Shelter in Place
Students stay in their classroom (due to a nearby chemical spill, accident, etc.) Students will not evacuate in this situation and will ignore all bells.

What parents should do: If a “shelter in place” will affect dismissal, instructions will be sent to parents through the school phone system, Almaden webpage, and Almaden PTA Facebook page. These instructions might include a delayed pickup time or alternate pickup location. Otherwise, students will be dismissed normally if the situation has been resolved.

3. Major Event
In the case of a large-scale, citywide event (such as a severe earthquake), the school will monitor your student until a parent, guardian or designee picks them up from school.

What parents should do: During a major event, parents will check students out from adult staff. Students will be located in front of the cafeteria, and site staff will provide checkout instructions as parents arrive.
