Most Common Questions about the Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Program

Thank you for your interest in Bachrodt Charter Academy and for valuing learning in two languages!  Here are some of the most commonly asked questions for your review.

Q1: How do I find out more about the Two-Way Immersion Program?

Our mandatory orientation is where you can find out more about the program. To find out about our mission statement and goals, please explore the web site.  Bachrodt is in its 4th year of implementing the Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Program and currently in K, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade.  We plan to grow by one grade level each year until we reach 5th grade.  We offer a 90/10 model, where students start learning in Spanish 90% of the day and in English 10% of the day.  More details will be explained at the orientation.

Q2: I am interested in enrolling my child in Kindergarten. What is the process?

Enrollment for any San Jose Unified School is done at the Enrollment Centers in the spring prior to the child starting Kindergarten. Since we are a charter school, you do not have to live in the district to enroll in our program.  The enrollment process for all families wishing to enroll in our TWBI Program begins by attending a MANDATORY orientation at our district office or school. At this session, parents will be given an orientation verification slip, which you then take to the Enrollment Center. Without this special slip, you cannot select Bachrodt’s TWBI Program.

Q3: When do the orientation sessions take place and how do I sign up?

Orientations begin in early January and are offered in the morning and evening to accommodate those who cannot come during the day. We ask you to please call the school district at 535-6008 to sign up for the orientations there or our school office at 535-6211 to sign up for the sessions here. Space is limited so please be sure to call to ensure a seat is reserved for you. Furthermore, selection for Bachrodt’s TWBI is first come first served, based on orientation date and language balance requirements.

Q4: When do I enroll my child for Kindergarten?

Kindergarten registration takes place from February to March prior to the Fall when the child will enter Kindergarten. The first phase of enrollment closes at the end of March. If you want your child to be considered for Bachrodt, you MUST enroll him/her during the first phase that closes at the end of March. If you live within SJUSD boundaries you can start calling to schedule your enrollment appointment beginning Dec 1st, 2011.  For those outside of the SJUSD boundaries, you must wait until you are notified that you have been admitted into our program before you can schedule any enrollment appointment.

Q5: If I choose Bachrodt will my child be automatically enrolled at Bachrodt?

Regretfully no. We have more students interested in Bachrodt than we have capacity for. It is a first come, first served system based on the date you attend orientation and language balance needed for our TWBI classrooms.  Parents can expect to be notified in April if they were assigned to Bachrodt.

Q6: Is there anything I can do to improve my child’s chance of getting into Bachrodt?

No. Volunteering or donating time and funds will not improve any child’s chance of assignment at Bachrodt. Although parental involvement is a part of our charter and strongly encouraged, selection is strictly based on orientation date of attendance and language balance needs. Children who are not assigned to Bachrodt will be placed on a wait list.

Q7: How does the wait list work?

If a child moves and leaves the program, the first child on the wait list will be called. However, bear in mind that we have low attrition in our TWBI program, and sometimes the list does not move at all during the school year.

Q8: Can my child enter the TWBI Program at a grade other than Kindergarten?

If a child enters our school after the beginning of 1st grade, the child must have been enrolled in another bilingual program or be bilingual. We regret that we cannot accept monolingual English speakers after the beginning of 1st grade. Spanish speakers must score at a certain benchmark on language assessments to be admitted after the beginning of 1st grade.

Q9: If my child gets into Bachrodt, will siblings have priority?

Yes. Once a child is at Bachrodt, the siblings do have priority as long as parents complete the application at a mandatory meeting established for current TWBI families.

Q10: I am interested in visiting the school and finding out more about the program. Can I come and visit?

Fortunately, yes!  We have scheduled tours to accommodate those requests. The tour dates are posted on our web site along with the mandatory orientation ones.  Please note that the tours are to highlight both the English Only and TWBI Programs, so you will be visiting both. We are confident that you will be pleased with what you see and will want to return for an orientation to begin the process of giving your child the gift of two languages!

Q11: Who can I contact if I have any additional questions?

We assure you that all of your questions will be answered at an orientation.  But, if you would like, you can call our school at 535-6211 and ask for our instructional coach and TWBI Program Coordinator, Veronica Miranda-Pinkney.  She will be happy to assist you in anyway that she can.

We thank you for your interest in Bachrodt and look forward to welcoming you to our school campus and hopefully our family in the fall.
