Basketball Boys 6th/7th East Side League

Greetings! Thank you for your interest in joining the 6th/7th grade boy’s East Side League basketball team.  My name is Jamal Mpenda (Coach Jamal) and I will be the head coach this year.  I will be assisted by Mr.  Chris Lum (Coach Chris).

This is a competitive team that will carry between 12 and 15 players.  Tryouts are scheduled to be held in late November/early December. The actual dates and times, as well as other important information, will be given out at a later date. Please listen for the announcements to get up to date information.

One important thing to note is that I coach both the 6th/7th and 8th grade boys East Side League basketball teams.  To save on gym space and time, tryouts for both teams will be held at the same time.

You must attend every day of tryouts to be considered for the team.  If you are unable to make all tryout dates, please contact Coach Jamal prior to the first day of tryouts and explain your situation.

Prior to tryouts all individuals must turn in their SJUSD Medical form to the Student Service office. Players will not be allowed to tryout unless this form is turned in.

What to bring to try-outs:
A positive and “can do” attitude
Basketball shoes (preferably “high tops” that go up to the ankles).  Basketball shoes must not have black soles
Basketball shorts (gym shorts is okay too)
Basketball shirt/jersey
Bottled water, Gatorade, or Powerade

Coach’s Background:
My basketball background includes both playing and coaching experiences.  I’ve played on both middle school and high school teams.  I have ten years of coaching experience which include four years at the high school level, one year in a boys and girls club league, and six years in park and rec league.  During the past two summers, I’ve assisted at the Almaden Community Center’s summer basketball camp.
