BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Boys volleyball at Bret Harte is open to sixth, seventh and eighth graders.  Try-outs usually begin the last school days in January and the team of twelve is announced the first week in February.  There are 3-5 try-out days depending upon gym availability and the amount of students trying out.  It is extremely important to attend all try-out dates in order to increase your chances of making the team.  If you can not attend a particular day, it is imperative that you let Mrs. Genise know by email (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) or in person.

Once a team has been chosen, there will be practices four days a week, Mondays through Thursdays, until games begin.  Once games begin, there will be two practices and two games a week.  Practices usually run from 4:30 until 6 p.m. and games usually start around 4:30 as well.

A little more information about the history of volleyball at Bret Harte…  Seventh and eighth grade girls volleyball began at Bret Harte because Addison Jones (a former assistant principal) fought to establish a vast after school sports program at Bret Harte.  He was able to get Bret Harte signed up for the East Side Sports League after a few years of hard work and determination.  We began the league with two teams: girls seventh grade volleyball and girls eighth grade volleyball.  Coach Carrie Genise coached both of those teams starting sometime around 1998.  Slowly, other sports were added to Bret Harte that competed in the East Side Sports League: basketball, softball, cross country, track, tennis and finally: boys volleyball (about six years after girls volleyball came onto the scene at Bret Harte).  Coach Carrie Genise coached the boys and girls volleyball teams for a few years before concentrating her efforts on the boys team sometime around 2005.  Coach R. Genise (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011), Coach McCormick (2000), Coach Fowler and Coach Wong (2010 and 2011) have also spent years coaching the girls volleyball teams.  Coach R. Genise coached the boys volleyball team in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Warmly,

Carrie Genise
