B6 - Weekly Newsletter

B-6 Parents and Students:
Be sure to look through your student’s white envelope! This week there are several flyers and student work samples. Graded items include the Chapter 4 science test.

State testing (called the SBAC or CAASPP) begins this coming week. Our test days are: Monday April 23, Thursday April 26, Monday April 30, and Wednesday May 2.  Typically we test for one to two hours per test day, beginning at 8:45.  If your student would like to re-do some of the practice tests that we did in school, he/she is welcome to do so - please go to the following website: https://login1.cloud1.tds.airast.org/student/V263/Pages/LoginShell.aspx?c=California_PT
A few helpful things you can do for your student: ensure they get a good night’s rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and send to school with a positive attitude!  Also, please do your best to avoid doctor’s and dentist appointments during test days. Also this is a secure test, so NO electronic devices are allowed such as cellphones, electronic watches, pedometers, etc. If your student brings any of these items to school, they must be OFF and in their backpack.

A few people are beginning to ask about Gold Rush attire, so I thought I would share with all!
We encourage all volunteers and students to dress in Gold Rush attire ... it can be done easily and inexpensively!
Here are some suggestions:

Boys & Men (think “cowboy”):

Jeans or solid color long pants, White or plaid button up long-sleeve shirt, Cowboy hat.

Girls & Women (think “prairie dress”):

Long floral dress, or a floral or denim skirt, and a plain solid color shirt, Apron, Straw hat or bonnet.
Tips: Shop at Goodwill for items you don’t have! 
Girls can borrow a skirt or dress from Mom! Fasten with safety pins or a belt. If it’s a bit tool long, that is ok.
Aprons can be fashioned from a plain, oblong dishcloth and pin it to your waist!
Boys can borrow one of Dad’s work shirts and roll up the sleeves.

This week’s agenda included:


Students continued Origo Module 11, multiplication strategies.


Students completed a research project inspired by Trumpet of the Swan - focus is informational writing and presenting.


Students read two short stories “Wild Fires” and “Salmon Summer” ; focus is referring to details and examples in a text.

Social Studies

Students completed Chapter 9.

Agenda for Monday, April 23 - Friday, April 27, 2018:


Students will complete Origo Module 11; test is Friday, April 27.


Students will read the short story “Cendrillon” and compare that to other Cinderella stories from other cultures.


Students will begin an in-class Ecosystems research project.

Social Studies

Students will test Chapter 9, on Wednesday, April 25; because this is testing week, and I don’t want to add undue stress, this test will be open book.


Students will participate in science lab on Wednesday, April 25. Students will begin Chapter 5, Ecosystems.

Dear Parents,
      Welcome to second grade in G-30! I am so pleased to welcome you and your child to our classroom. I know that this will be a productive and rewarding school year for all of us. I am a firm believer in providing students with a safe, hard-working, loving classroom where they can feel in control of their own learning. I plan a curriculum that meets your child where they are academically and helps them to be self-guided learners. I hope to work together with you to create a successful learning experience for your child. 
    For those of you I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting, allow me to tell you a little bit about myself. I grew up in a little city, nestled in the East Bay hills, named Orinda. I followed both of my parents’ footsteps and attended college at Chico State, where I received my bachelor’s degree in liberal studies as well as my teaching credential. I got hired at Graystone in my first interview out of college and have been teaching second grade ever since! For the last twelve years I have been Miss Chappelle. I got married last September and am beginning my first full year as Mrs. Bernhardt. My husband teaches math at Pioneer High School down the road.
    Part of being at Graystone is keeping in contact with my students’ parents and it is important to me that I do just that. My e-mail is a great way for you to contact me as I check it regularly before and after school. There will also be monthly newsletters coming home with your child that will explain upcoming events and assignments. Second graders will be responsible for nightly homework as well as additional projects that I will explain in the newsletter as they arise.
    I am looking forward to meeting you and getting to know your child. I know we will have a great year together!

Dear Parents,

Welcome to third grade in B-8!  It is exciting to see new faces after a relaxing summer vacation.  This is my eighth year teaching third grade, and I am so excited that I will be working with your child to ensure a fun and successful third grade learning experience. 
This is my thirteenth year at Graystone, and I previously taught first and second grades.  As a third-generation educator in my family, I have been raised with high educational values and standards.  My experience as a second language learner in high school taught me the importance of practice and hard work to accomplish academic success, and I hope to share this belief with my students. 
As students journey into third grade, it is my goal to create an accepting, positive, and encouraging environment that celebrates individuality and fosters children’s critical thinking and learning.  This week students and I will be getting to know each other and will be establishing some classroom rules and routines.  Don’t be surprised to see how much learning your child will cultivate this year.  As the third grade curriculum is filled with various new concepts, we will jump into studying the units in math and language arts. 
Homework will be sent home with your child this week to help them quickly adjust to the new school year.  Successfully completing neat and organized homework on time is expected in third grade, and your child may need additional support from you.  Most of the homework is due the next day, and students need to bring in their homework planner to school each day.  Please review your child’s daily homework written on the homework planner and make sure that you initial the portion that describes the homework.
I believe in the importance of teacher and parent communication.  Please fill in and return the Parent Contact form to school by the end of next week.  Starting in September, a monthly third grade newsletter will be sent home at the beginning of the month to let you know about current activities, units of study, and other important information. 
Information about third grade curriculum and activities will be shared at Back to School Night on Tuesday, August 30th.  Please mark your calendar for this important event.  If you need to contact me for any reason, stop by after school, send a note with your child or e-mail me.
I am looking forward to meeting you and getting to know you and your child.  There will be tremendous amount of learning happening in class, and I believe it will be a rewarding year for all of us.
