Graystone Elementary School – “Home of the Warm Fuzzies”

Roots & Wings began in 1987 at Graystone Elementary School.  Parents and faculty united 22 years ago to create what we now embrace as our life skills and self-esteem training for our students.  The program has evolved quite a bit over time, through the tireless effort of many parent volunteers.  Today, we offer parent facilitated curriculum for Kindergarten through 5th grade.  There is a series of 16 lessons per grade level … each one building upon the previous year. 

What I have found as a parent volunteer during the last five years is that I enjoy a common language with my children, as a result of teaching these valuable lessons in their classroom.  I have the opportunity to meet all of the students in the class and get to know them as unique individuals.  It is so much fun to be greeted with a hug by one of the students that has gotten to know me through this volunteer time.

I encourage you to consider getting involved in Roots & Wings this year.  Sign up sheets will be in the white envelopes that go home on Friday, August 28.  Please turn them in to your child’s teacher as soon as possible.  The Parent Facilitator training is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16, from 9-12noon in the Graystone Cafeteria.  Please feel free to join us to receive training and/or to find out more about Roots & Wings. 

If you are interested in getting involved, but don’t want to teach the lessons in the classroom, we will have a Program Volunteer opportunity for you.  You can choose how you would like to share your talents.  This year, we need help with our annual fundraiser, the Roots & Wings Holiday Boutique.  It will take place the first week of December.  There are many things that you can do for this (help make crafts, source items for the sale, work a shift, help set up and price, etc.).  We are also looking for volunteers to work on sourcing new videos, books, and updating curriculum for each grade level.  We will need volunteers to help with lunch time activities this year, as well.
