Welcome to First Grade at Graystone School! First grade is a full year filled with new and exciting learning experiences. I am looking forward to sharing this year with your child. I would like to begin by introducing myself to you.
My name is Liz Marino. Today is the start of my thirty-first year of teaching, all of which have been in the San Jose Unified School District. This is my twenty-second year teaching at Graystone. I live in Almaden Valley with my husband, Jim (a teacher and coach at Los Gatos High School), and two sons, Drew (267years old, a teacher and coach in SJUSD) and Trevor (25 years old working in the high tech field and recently married!). We have lived in Almaden Valley for almost 25 years. I feel very fortunate to both live and work in this wonderful community.
At the beginning of each month I will send home a parent letter. In it I will cover our current units of study, upcoming events, and other important information regarding the classroom and school. Notes and schoolwork papers will be sent home on Fridays in a white envelope. A purple, plastic folder will be brought back and forth to school each day. Please check this folder daily for notes and homework. I ask that each child have a backpack (no rolling ones, please, too bulky to store in the classroom) to carry items to and from school daily. Please label all removable clothing, backpacks, lunch boxes, books, etc.
The school day begins at 8:40 a.m. Please have your child in line on the black top, next to the playground equipment areas, by 8:35 a.m. Instruction begins immediately and being tardy can be disruptive to the class and upsetting to your child. The children are dismissed from the classroom at 2:45 p.m. (early dismissal on Tuesday, 1:05 p.m.) Please wait outside the classroom door for your child if you are picking him/her up at the room. Or make sure he/she understands the area in which you are going to meet (i.e. carpool area).
As a new school year begins I am sure you have many questions about classroom procedures and curriculum. I will share this information with you at Back to School Night on Tuesday, August 29th. Until then, I will have special notes and important forms to fill out so please check your child’s folder daily for those.
The morning recess is at 10:00 a.m. If your child would like to bring a snack they have to eat it at this time on the silver picnic tables. Please make sure that a healthy snack is sent to school.
I am looking forward to a great year together as
“We learn plenty in room E-20!”
