Green Team

A key part of Hacienda students’ environmental education is to empower them to be protectors of the natural world. Students, parents and teachers all play essential roles in “greening” Hacienda’s impact on the environment.

All Hacienda students learn and practice the three Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle. We investigate how to decipher which items can be recycled, composted or reused. Classrooms have recycling bins and buddy classes to transfer recyclables each week.Teams of students maintain a clean environment on campus with grabbers and buckets, so no trash blows away to nearby creeks. Compostable materials are collected to “feed the worms” in the outdoor classroom’s garden composting bins. Then, the resulting compost is added to Hacienda’s garden beds to grow crops. Our students take pride in their power to make a meaningful, positive difference for planet Earth and its inhabitants.

Parents also assist our green efforts in a variety of ways. Hacienda parents help educate new families about how to pack their children’s lunch foods and drinks in reusable containers. Many families opt-in to receive the electronic version of school communications instead of paper. Efforts are made at Hacienda events to reduce wasteful food packaging and provide recycling bins. Each class has a set of reusable plates and cups to use instead of disposable ones. These are just a few of the ways Hacienda’s families work to reduce our impact on the environment.
