New Student Orientation/Summer Bridges

Wednesday August 12th, 2009

This exciting program gives all new Hoover students the chance to get to know Hoover before school starts in the fall. Students will meet teachers, current Hoover students, and other new students while learning about and preparing for middle school. This year’s program is being offered on Wednesday, August 12th from 8:00a.m. until 3:00p.m.

Students will participate in spirit activities, take a school tour, visit classrooms, enjoy lunch with our current 8th grade WEB Leaders, and participate in exciting learning activities. Interested students can also participate in our end of day free swim program.

New this year! This year, we will be offering a Parent Workshop to our orientation. Two workshop time are available – one from 8:15a.m. to 9:45a.m. and another from 5:30pm to 7:00p.m. on Wednesday, August 12th. Parents who attend these workshops will learn about how to best support their student’s middle school experience and become familiar with the campus and school personnel.
This is one of Hoover’s most popular programs, and space is very limited, so be sure to sign up today to ensure your incoming Hoover student is able to participate. Please fill out the application and return it by mail or in person to Hoover no later than Thursday, August 6th.

Project Citizen in Sacramento

A big congratulations to Mr. Mendez’s, Ms Verret’s and Mr. Laskowski’s 8th grade students who presented their Project Citizen boards, binders and speeches to a panel of officials on Friday, June 5th, at the state capitol!  Hoover was one of three schools presenting and the only middle school in California invited to the Capitol.  We the People: Project Citizen is a curricular program for middle, secondary, and post-secondary students, youth organizations, and adult groups that promotes competent and responsible participation in local and state government. The program helps participants learn how to monitor and influence public policy. In the process, they develop support for Democratic values and principles, tolerance, and feelings of political efficacy.

For more information, please contact Albert Mendez who is a district coordinator for Project Citizen.  He can provide free classroom materials for project implementation.  See the website link below:

Spanish Class News

Hoover students have the opportunity to take an equivalent high school class that allows them to earn 10 high school credits and start satisfying university requirements.  Two of those classes are Spanish 1-2 and Spanish 1-2 Native Speakers.  Students who take the class and earn a C or better grade each semester and pass the district exit exam at the end of the school year with a 70% or higher score will earn 10 credits. This year, 89% of the students who took the district exit exam at Hoover earned a 70% or higher score on the Spanish Exit Exam.  We are very proud of our students for their hard work and responsibility, but most of all, for their success.

2009 Hoover Summer Math Packet
All 7th and 8th graders:
All incoming Pre-Algebra and Algebra students are required to complete the appropriate summer math packet and have it ready to turn in on the first day of school, August 17, 2009. Each packet has instructions to remind students how to do the problems. All of the problems in each packet should be review of material students studied in the 2008-2009 school year. At the end of the first week of school, students will be given a short test on the material. We want students to keep their math skills fresh and be ready to start immediately on the first day of school.

All Hoover students were given math packets at the end of the school year. However, if you can not find a copy, they are available at the school site (as of August 3) and at the links below. Students who will be enrolled in Math6 do not have a summer packet.
