FREE GATE Opportunity for Students!
Students (all ages) from throughout the region (of Santa Clara, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, San Benito, Alameda, and Monterey Counties) are invited to attend the GATE Student-to-Student Conference being held at UCSC on May 8, 2010. This event is FREE
Three Ways to Participate:
• Students can present a workshop of their choice, and also attend other students’ workshops. Workshops can be about almost anything!
• Students can attend the conference without presenting, and just enjoy other students’ workshops.
• Parents/Guardians can attend the parent workshops, or attend the student workshops. (Parents: if your child is presenting, you will also need to be in the classroom while they present their workshop.)
Much like at an adult conference, students who attend will receive a program that lists the various 25 minute presentations or workshops, and they will get to choose to attend up to four sessions.
Attached is an invitation for you to offer to those students who are “resident experts” in a particular topic, or who are passionate about a hobby or topic they have learned about inside or outside of school. Please download it, fill it out and give to students! This is a wonderful opportunity for students to become exposed to each other’s enthusiasm for learning. All students are invited to participate.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT HOOVER
Drama Play
By: Marissa Brown & Cassandra Morquecho
Hoover Middle School’s Advanced Drama Class performed the play “Hurricane Smith and the Garden of the Golden Monkey”. They performed last week on Thursday the 10th and Friday the 11th in the big Historic Hoover Theatre.
Hoover Drama teacher Mrs. Jordan explained, “It’s about a student who is trying to sell her jungle play to a director and the drama club tries to act it out to the director.” The play was action packed with airplane crashes, head hunters, and a golden monkey. Hoover drama student Jennine Pecot said, “I practiced my lines and blocking when I had the time to.” Any spare time that drama students had, they used it for rehearsing so that they would be ready for their big show.
Winter Break Plans
By Isaac Gutierrez, Ivan Marquez, and Abraham Solorio
Hoover Students will be doing many fun things during their winter break. Alexis Najar said “ My family and I are attending Christmas in the Park to ice skate and walk around”. She also said that they are going to Christmas parties and then we will stay home to unwrap gifts.
Another Hoover student, Fatima Ortega said, “I’m spending my winter break with my family and we are going to have so much fun because we are going to have a huge party.” She also said that they will watch movies, unwrap presents at night, go ice skating, and have a big dinner.
The last student interviewed was Wynton Bowen. He explained how he was going to spend his winter break, “Im going to hang out with my family and friends, eat cookies, play games, and have a Christmas party.
Toys and cans Food Drive
By Eric Britton, Guadalupe Campos, and Joe Denton
Students at Hoover Middle School donated food and cans to the less fortunate people. The Can and Food Drive started in December. Ms. Dyckson’s fourth period class thought it was a good idea to donate toys and cans to children that are less fortunate. “What I get in return is that I know that I helped others and made sure the world was a better place, ” offered Dyckson.
Dyckson’s students had something to say too. Aziah Griffen donated ten things to charity. “I donated toys and cans to charity because I wanted to help people,” she said. ”I got happiness in return,” Griffen added.
Buy a Yearbook!
By Cindy Monter and Mireya Rodriguez
Hoover Middle School students can pre-order the yearbook for $30 dollars now, however later the price will go up. The theme of this years yearbook is iHawk, and you can purchase the yearbook in room H-207 from Ms.Voskes.
“Students can share their memories with their friends and look at pictures of stuff they did that year,” said Yearbook student Hannah Pham. Axel Ayala, from the yearbook staff added, “There is gonna be a lot of events featured in this year’s yearbook including dances and spirit pictures.”
Girls Basketball
By Destinee Coral, Hannah Pham, and Krystal Rodriguez
The Hoover Girls’ Basketball preseason games have had mixed results. At first, they were undefeated for a couple of weeks, then finally lost to Cabrillo Middle School. They then lost to Peterson Middle School, but still qualified to play in the playoffs.
A member of the basketball team, Melanie Reis, said, “I joined basketball because it’s fun and it’s a good learning experience. Plus I have all my friends playing with me.” Sadly, the girls were defeated by Peterson Middle School, but it’s okay because it’s only preseason. When they go in the real season, they will be playing better teams and hope to do better.
Boys Basketball
By Blanca Diaz, Elizabeth Fernandez, and Damasis Jasso
The Hoover’s Boys Basketball team just started their season and had their first tournament at Burnett. “My favorite part of basketball is juking people out and making that perfect lay-up,” said Rene Chacon, a member of the team. “ The reason I joined basketball was because basketball is my heart,” he added. Francisco Rivas said “My favorite part of basketball is practice because it gives me a chance to be more focused on what I’m doing in a game.” The basketball games are on Thursdays and Saturdays so come support our team!

HEALTH NEWS
Parents - as you may know, flu can be easily spread from person to person. Therefore, we are taking steps to reduce the spread of flu at Hoover. We are working closely with the Public Health Department to monitor flu conditions and make decisions about the best steps to take concerning schools. We will keep you updated with new information as it becomes available.
Parent cooperation will be important in keeping our students healthy and limiting the spread of influenza.
• Teach your children to wash their hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub. You can set a good example by doing this yourself.
• Teach your children not to share personal items like drinks, food or unwashed utensils, and to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues. Covering up their coughs or sneezes using the elbow, arm or sleeve instead of the hand when a tissue is unavailable.
• Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.
• Keep sick children at home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have fever or do not have signs of fever, without using fever-reducing drugs. Keeping children with a fever at home will reduce the number of people who may get infected.
• Do not send children to school if they are sick. Any children who are determined to be sick while at school will be sent home.
