Hoover Middle School > Language Arts/Social Studies Department

Language Arts and Social Studies Department

Language Arts
In Language Arts, students will meet the California state standards in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students will use the Prentice Hall Literature series, as well as, San Jose Unified School District approved novels while focusing on these standards. A variety of genres will be studied in class. Students’ progress toward mastery of the standards will be assessed by several benchmark tests given throughout the year.

Social Studies
In social studies, students will be “reading to learn,” and will be working on strategies which will help them to strengthen their reading skills while also becoming successful learners within theier grade level content. They will expand their understanding of history by studying the people and events that ushered in the dawn of the major western and non-western civilizations. Curriculum is firmly in line with our California State Standards.

English Language Development
The focus of the ELD Program at Hoover Middle School is language development for students whose first language is not English. Language Development includes the skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. At Hoover we offer three levels of ELD Instruction - Beginning ESL, Intermediate ESL, and Advanced ESL. The goals of the ELD Program are to acquire English, to achieve academic success, and to develop positive self-esteem.
