Hoover Middle School > Gina Kim

Ms. Kim’s Pre Algebra Class

Dear Parents/Guardians,

My name is Gina Kim, and I’m your child’s Pre-Algebra math teacher for the 2010-2011 school year. I am extremely excited to be working at Hoover Middle School and I look forward to a prosperous year with you and your child. Please do not hesitate to call or email me if you have any concerns or questions. Here’s to a great year!

COURSE
This course reinforces and builds upon mathematical skills taught in previous classes in order to prepare students for Algebra (in the following school year). The course content follows the 7th grade California State Standards. Students will study fractions, decimals, percents, positive and negative numbers, and rational numbers; ratios and proportions; and practice solving algebraic equations. Students will develop and expand problem solving skills (creatively and analytically) in order to solve word problems. Students will use manipulatives, calculators, and some computer programs. A strong emphasis will be on understanding mathematical principles required for success in this course and as a foundation for future mathematics courses.

TEXTBOOK
Holt, Mathematics Course 2: Pre-Algebra.
Online resources for the textbook can be found http://go.hrw.com (you will need to scroll down on the page to find the “Go resources” search box).

HOMEWORK
Every Monday, students will receive a different colored Week at a Glance sheet that displays that week’s homework assignments. On the back, students will be responsible to complete Warm up problems (in class) for that week. I will attach the current week’s homework sheet below.

TEST/QUIZ
Most Fridays, we will have a quiz or test covering the topics from class that week. Quizzes are approximately 5-10 questions and tests are about 25+ questions.
