Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year at Hoover! I anticipate a rewarding and exciting year of personal and academic growth for our students. To enable success in the classroom, this outlines my teaching philosophy and behavioral expectations.
I strongly believe that our student’s education is a team effort: students, parents, and teachers are all integral parts of the whole. Your interest, confidence and attention in your son or daughter is certain to help him or her achieve future success. It is the student’s responsibility to understand what is expected and to always do their best.
In an effort to make our students readers and writers, they need to have a comfortable, organized and well stocked place at home to read and write. I expect all students to read for a minimum of 30 minutes every night. In addition to daily reading, we will be using the Prentice Hall Literature Textbooks. Every week there will be Literature work in their Readers Companion books and ongoing Writers Workshop assignments. Each student needs to have a well organized folder or binder with paper, pens and pencils, and one spiral bound notebook for each subject: Language Arts and Social Studies. The most frequent reason for low grades in middle school is poor organization. Please make sure that you have all of your materials for class every day.
For Language Arts, the spiral bound notebook is used to keep their Writers Workshop orgainized and at their fingertips and will be used daily. For Social Studies, the notebook is the destination for all of the notes on the chapter we are studying in the Early Medieval text. Most of their grade is a direct result of how thorough their participation has been during daily lessons.
Every student will be expected to read 2 in-class novels and at least 4 other novels of their choosing. Please take them to the library or book store regularly to keep them supplied with interesting books to read both in class and at home.
Please encourage your student to read each and every night and provide them with a quiet and well lit place to read and study.
We will soon be handing in our first Notebooks Social Studies. Make sure they get turned in!
I look forward to working with all of your children! I thoroughly enjoy them and I hope the feeling will be mutual :-)
