Informational Coffees for New Families

TEAM Horace has organized two Informational Coffees this winter for families of prospective Horace Mann Elementary students.  These are scheduled soon on Saturday, January 28th & Sunday the 29th, 2017

Two of our current Horace Mann families have offered to host these informal get-togethers; we invite you to contact us here for more details about time and location.  Meet and talk with students, parents and faculty and learn about the wonderful things happening at our school and the benefits of an International Baccalaureate education. Please contact us for more information at our email: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Should these dates not work with your schedule please feel free to contact the school or TEAM Horace for another better time. School tours are available and our IB coordinator, Mr. Ramon Sanchez, would be happy to show you around our great facility and allow you to meet staff and see examples of the IB Primary Years Program in action. We can also put you in touch with parents for further discussions.

Please note that if Horace Mann is not your designated neighborhood school, you will need to attend a tour in order to be transferred into the IB program.

Our neighborhood public school has a lot to offer, and we would love to tell you more about it!

Shopping at Amazon helps Horace Mann School

During the holiday season—and year-round—please remember to start your Amazon shopping at the TEAM Horace Affiliate link provided on the left-side of this webpage.  We receive a little percentage from every transaction. Last year, TEAM Horace received $450 from this program!

After the link there is no additional text or message confirming the TEAM Horace affiliation but that unique starting URL (partial screenshot below) will insure you’re on the right track. Amazon will still acknowledge your personal account, settings and lists.  Proceed to browse, select merchandise and pay for your order as usual.

TH Amazon Affiliate URL screenshot Nov2016

Some parents have reported the link works better from a browser on a desktop or laptop computer than using the Amazon app on a mobile device.  They suggest any shopping you do on the app can be saved to a “wish list” and then finalized from a home computer after opening your Amazon browser from the TEAM Horace Affiliate link. Thanks for making the extra little effort to help our students.

Joint Statement from California Legislative Leaders on Result of Presidential Election

Wednesday, November 09, 2016
SACRAMENTO – California Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) and California Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Paramount) released the following statement on the results of the President election:

Today, we woke up feeling like strangers in a foreign land, because yesterday Americans expressed their views on a pluralistic and democratic society that are clearly inconsistent with the values of the people of California.

We have never been more proud to be Californians.

By a margin in the millions, Californians overwhelmingly rejected politics fueled by resentment, bigotry, and misogyny.

The largest state of the union and the strongest driver of our nation’s economy has shown it has its surest conscience as well.

California is – and must always be – a refuge of justice and opportunity for people of all walks, talks, ages and aspirations – regardless of how you look, where you live, what language you speak, or who you love.

California has long set an example for other states to follow. And California will defend its people and our progress. We are not going to allow one election to reverse generations of progress at the height of our historic diversity, scientific advancement, economic output, and sense of global responsibility.

We will be reaching out to federal, state and local officials to evaluate how a Trump Presidency will potentially impact federal funding of ongoing state programs, job-creating investments reliant on foreign trade, and federal enforcement of laws affecting the rights of people living in our state. We will maximize the time during the presidential transition to defend our accomplishments using every tool at our disposal.

While Donald Trump may have won the presidency, he hasn’t changed our values. America is greater than any one man or party. We will not be dragged back into the past. We will lead the resistance to any effort that would shred our social fabric or our Constitution.

California was not a part of this nation when its history began, but we are clearly now the keeper of its future.

###

Business Sponsors for the 2016 Ginkana Festival & Fundraiser

Dear Horace Mann families & friends,
We need your help asking local businesses to support our upcoming Ginkana Festival fundraiser. Business sponsors provide important funding that makes our children’s Horace Mann experience so special!

We are asking for everyone’s help. Please talk with your employer, store owners and other business people you know in our community about making a donation to support our children at Horace Mann.

It’s pretty easy:
1)  Meet with someone at a business/store face to face, and use a copy of our 3 page Sponsor Invitation.
    Letter: Ginkana_Biz_Letter+TH_Letterhead.pdf
    Levels: GinkanaBizSponsorLetter_pg2_LevelDescriptions.pdf
    Form: GinkanaBizSponsorLetter_pg3_Form.pdf
(print from the links and we will have copies in the office soon)

2)  Tell them all the good things their donation will provide our students, including library books, the school play, art classes and science camp.

3) Ask them to fill out the form and return it to the school by Friday, Sept. 30.

4) Write a note in the school office Ginkana notebook about your visit or a suggestion for us to follow up on.

Be sure to invite them to the festival on Saturday, Oct. 22! If you have any questions, please ask your child’s teacher, Mr. Sanchez or Mrs. Briza, or email Mr. Shinya at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Thank you for all your help. Every dollar counts!

School Festival & Fundraiser is in the works for October

TH Ginkana 2016 word+date only

By now you have probably heard, that we are going to try something exciting and partially new this year! We will still keep the classroom baskets for your student’s teacher’s classroom budget. We will still try to raise money to keep programs like ART Express, theater program, mariachi etc. on campus. We will do this mainly through business and family donations, and festival revenue.

But we are adding a whole new level of FUN into the mix! And even better, EVERYBODY can participate! Before I explain a little bit more, we want you to know that we need a lot of volunteers in all committees, to make this festival a success. We don’t have many signups yet, and it’s impossible to pull this off with the current only handful of people. Many hands make light work too, which always helps! We will always honor volunteer’s time limitations and commitments.

In short:
-The Ginkana Festival will be held on Saturday, October 22nd 10:30am - 2:30pm
-No more walk-a-thon walking and collecting pledges! Instead, everybody will get to enjoy traditional carnival games and super fun field games.
-Kids from all ages are encouraged to participate.
-Laughter, friendly competition and enjoying great music and food are key phrases for this event

Specific information will become available as the date comes closer. Look for hmparents emails and Thursday folder flyers.

But we need parent/care giver help, and lots of it.

Please inquire at the school office or in your student’s teacher’s classroom. Or send an email to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Thank you so much for bearing with us! And as always, if you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

Jenneke & Teresa

Horace Mann School Informational Coffees & Tours

But it’s not too late to learn about Horace Mann from Horace Mann families. Parents interested in learning about our school and the IB program are welcome to contact us.  Feel free to call the school office (408-535-6237) or email a TEAM Horace member (see the listing on the right side) to set up a get-together at your convenience

School tours are also available and our IB coordinator, Mr. Ramon Sanchez, would be happy to show you around our great facility and allow you to see examples of the IB Primary Years Program in action.  Please call the school and request a time with Mr. Sanchez at your convenience.

Please note that if Horace Mann is not your designated neighborhood school, you will need to attend a tour in order to be transferred into the IB program.

Our neighborhood public school has a lot to offer, and we would love to tell you more about it!

Parent Book Club / Club de lectura para Padres

One way to encourage your children to read is for them to see you reading on your own. Horace Mann Parents are invited to join in reading one book over the next month and then gathering in the school library for a discussion.
This book has many copies available in the SJ Public Library System so you can request one to borrow from the library.
The book is available in English and Spanish and the discussion will be translated in English and Spanish. This will also be a great way for each of us to get to know other parents in the school.

Luna Park Chalk Art Festival Grant
In January, TEAM Horace was awarded an $800 grant by the Awards Committee of the Luna Park Arts Foundation. This sum is to be used to support “Art Express”—parent-led art instruction at Horace Mann School—with additional supplies and programming.
Big, big thank you to Mr. Sanchez for organizing our participation in the Luna Park Chalk Art Festival last fall in Backesto Park and submitting our school for consideration for this award.

2015 Holiday Scholastic Book Fair
The December Book Fair achieved a grand total of over $5300 in sales! We thank all the students and families who visited and shopped. We hope you’re enjoying your new books.
The Scholastic Book Company will now provide our library with over $2600 in books from their publishing catalog. Our librarian, Mrs Podgorsek, is reviewing their big selection and putting together a final list for our school. Please look for those new books on our shelves later this spring.

2015 Walk-a-thon: Come One, Come All!
Our major fund-raiser, the 13th annual Walk-a-thon was Saturday October 24th, 2015. We want to thank all the students, families, teachers, staff and friends who came out, supported our school and made the day a successful and festive occasion. We surpassed our goal for a final sum of $31,402.00
