All Gender Restroom Message

Letter Head Hewitson
April 20, 2016

Dear Lincoln Community,

Lincoln has always valued an inclusive culture where all students feel safe and respected, which is why we feel confident that including two All-Gender restrooms will be a welcomed addition to our campus environment.

Starting on Monday, April 25 the two student restrooms on the 1st floor of Main Building will become All-Gender restrooms.

The Lincoln HS and SJUSD mission to eliminate the opportunity gap and deliver the finest 21st century education is a commitment to each and every student in our school that they will be included as a valued member of our community.

With this commitment to inclusion in mind, students will have the option of using the All-Gender restrooms or one of the restrooms labeled “Men” or “Women” which are located in the Main Building, in the outdoor classroom wings, and the locker rooms.  Existing, single-stall, All-Gender restrooms are currently available in the Nurse’s Office, Theatre Building, and Library.  There will be no change to staff restrooms, which include gender-specific and gender-neutral options.

For generations Lincoln students have upheld the “Do Right” tradition and I am confident our students will handle this change with appreciation, maturity, and respect.  School security staff and administrators will monitor discipline and safety in all areas, and there will be a non-emergency text line posted in all restrooms for students to report any potential harassment, bullying, or inappropriate behavior.

For more information, please refer to the attached Frequently Asked Questions page.  Also, do not hesitate to contact me, or any Lincoln administrator, if you have further questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Matthew Hewitson
Principal

All-Gender Restrooms   -  Frequently Asked Questions

What is an all-gender restroom?
An all-gender restroom, sometimes called a gender-neutral restroom, is an inclusive restroom that anyone of any gender can use. These restrooms can benefit many different people, including parents with differently gendered children, alter-abled people who may require the accompaniment of an attendant of a different gender, and trans and gender nonconforming people.

Who can use all-gender restrooms?
Any student may use the all-gender restrooms. These restrooms are not just for transgender people, but are intended to be inclusive spaces that are safe and accommodating for everyone.

Who can use restrooms labeled “Men” or “Women”?
SJUSD Board policy states that a student shall be permitted to use restroom facilities consistent with his or her gender identity, irrespective of the gender identity listed on the student’s official records. The use of either the restroom that corresponds to the student’s gender identity or a single stall restroom shall be a matter of choice for the student, and no student shall be compelled to use either of these options.

What if my student is not comfortable using an all-gender bathroom?
Multiple restrooms labeled Men or Women are located in the Main Building, in the outdoor classroom wings, and in the athletic facilities.

How will respectful behavior in bathrooms be encouraged?
For generations Lincoln students have upheld the “Do Right” tradition and I am confident our students will handle this change with appreciation, maturity, and respect.  School security staff and administrators will monitor discipline and safety in all areas, and there will be a non-emergency text line posted in all restrooms for students to report any potential harassment, bullying, or inappropriate behavior.

Who should I contact if I have a concern?
You may contact any administrator at Lincoln with a concern about our policy or to report inappropriate behavior or access issues.  Please call the Lincoln main line at 408-535-6300 and ask for any administrator.
