Dear Los Alamitos Families,
Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year! I hope you have had an enjoyable summer and I look forward to seeing you on the first day of school, Wednesday, August 12th at 8:50 am. In preparation for this year, Fausto, our custodian has been cleaning and preparing our school and classrooms for the students. Teachers have received additional training to provide even higher quality instruction in our classrooms in writing, reading, and mathematics. We are doing this to accomplish our vision “that all students are inspired and prepared to succeed in a global society.”
Please note that our start time is 5 minutes later for all students and the day ends at 2:55 for TK-3rd grade and 3:05 for 4th and 5th on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Early Tuesdays, starting on August 18th will dismiss at 1:53 pm (1st-3rd) and 2:04 pm (4th and 5th ). The first 8 days (Including 8/18) for Kindergarten & TK run from 8:50 AM – 1:00 PM (First 8 days are minimum days for K & TK only.) Hopefully, families who only have a primary grade student will be able to pick up their student and leave before 3:05 pm. Since we have 50 more students this year than last, I am hoping this will reduce the amount of traffic we have leaving the school at the same time.
The first 8 days for Kindergarten & TK run from 8:50 AM – 1:00 PM (First 8 days are minimum days for K & TK only.)
I hope you all have had a restful or at least enjoyable summer and are ready for a new school year! My summer included family, friends, travel and reading. I recommend reading Lost At School (Ross W. Greene), a book written to engage readers in reflection on why students with behavioral challenges are “falling through the cracks”; The Advantage (Patrick Lencioni) about organizational health; The Smartest Kids In The World (Amanda Ripley) and The Boys In The Boat (Daniel James Brown). It is truly a gift to have the time to immerse oneself in books and I plan to continue to make time to read throughout the school year!
This year, the staff at Los Alamitos is excited to continue our work in implementing the San Jose Unified Strategic Plan, Opportunity 21. We will also be continuing our Common Core State Standards focus and our implementation of the Lucy Caulkins writing curriculum at all grade levels. I am impressed by the growth in our students’ writing last year. The teachers’ dedication and enthusiasm around writing has really made a difference for our students.
There are several new additions on campus this year. Joining us are Mrs. Pine in 3rd grade, Miss Emmons in 2nd and Mrs. Seyan, one day a week as a primary teacher. I am very impressed with each one of our new staff members and the expertise and caring attitude they bring with them. I know that they are truly committed to our students!
I am fortunate to be principal at one of California’s distinguished elementary schools. I have been Los Alamitos’ principal since 2010, and every year, I am increasingly grateful to be surrounded by such motivated, smart, and caring staff and students. Together with parents and family members, we work hard to strengthen Los Alamitos’ reputation as a unique, rigorous, and truly special learning community.
It is a great time to be a Lion!
