OPPORTUNITY21: 2012-17 Strategic Plan

The world around us is changing rapidly, yet education has not been able to keep pace with these changes. We must be able to prepare our students to enter a 21st century society. Further, within our education system we clearly see an opportunity gap among our students. This is expressed in many ways including social, leadership, and most importantly academic opportunities. We need all our students to be ready to succeed in a 21st century global society. San Jose Unified is ready to make the necessary changes for our students and has released its 2012-2017 Strategic Plan, OPPORTUNITY21. The inspiration for this plan originated with the passage of Board Policy 0210 – Equity by the Board of Education. This plan is driven by a new vision and mission statement and supported by five key objectives.

Vision Statement
All San Jose Unified School District students are inspired and prepared to succeed in a global society.

Mission Statement
San Jose Unified School District’s mission is to eliminate the opportunity gap and provide every student with the finest 21st century education.

Strategic Plan Objectives

1. Provide a high quality and comprehensive instructional program.
2. Ensure students, staff, parents and community are both satisfied and engaged.
3. Demonstrate effective, efficient and exemplary practices in all divisions, departments, and schools.
4. Attract and recruit, support and retain a highly effective and diverse workforce.
5. Align resources to the strategic plan and equity policy and demonstrate cost effective budget management.

This Plan will touch every corner of the organization in an effort to ensure that all students are receiving a stellar education at San Jose Unified. You can find out more about these key changes and the impact to various stakeholders by clicking here . It will be the clear vision and mission that will drive our work as an organization and the objectives and strategies that will create the necessary change to accomplish our vision and mission. You can learn more about these strategies by clicking here.

If our organization is going to ensure our students are prepared with 21st century skills we must be clear about what these skills are. Based on feedback from the community and the review of research, San Jose Unified has developed the 5 C’s and digital literacy as the key 21st century skills. You can find out more about this by clicking here .

Over the past year San Jose Unified engaged over 3,500 stakeholders in the development of our new 5-year Strategic Plan.  Employees, parents, business leaders, civic leaders and students both current and alumni have provided feedback on how San Jose Unified can tackle these crucial issues.

In order to measure our progress, San Jose Unified has developed a set of Key Performance Measures (KPMs) that will drive our work and indicate our ability to reach our goals. You can find out more about these measures by clicking here.
