September 2000	Preschool Development/Expansion Identified as Board Study Priority
November 2000	Convened Preschool Task Force to study & make recommendations to the SJUSD Board regarding the expansion of preschool services. Attachment #1
May 2001	Preschool study completed and results reported to the SJUSD Board. Vision & Mission- Serve children aged 0-5 and their families to foster “school readiness.” Attachment #2 Recommendations: 1.Expand quality early care and educations programs throughout SJUSD. 2.Secure funding for expansion. 3. Provide services in order of priority. 4. Adopt standards. 5. Phase in expansion.
August 2001	Entered into Partnership w/ Children and Families First (CFF) Commission.
December 2001	Included Preschool expansion in Measure F Bond
March 2002	Measure F Bond Passed
Winter/Spring 2002	Development of “Preschool/School Readiness Initiative” CFF. Programs and services to children (aged 0-5) and their families. Conducted community outreach program. Parents and community representatives from local CBO’s participated in monthly meeting and planning retreat. Attachment # 3 Design & Development of Family Early Learning Centers (FELC). FELC is included in the CFF grant application as a “new” program. Three sites identified- Erikson, Washington, San Jose High Academy. FELC (At SJHA) program description. Attachment #4
June 2002	CFF Proposal Approved for “School Readiness” $1.4M annually for operation of programs for 0-5 aged children and their families. Attachment # 5
June 2002	Preschool Facility Expansion Plan Completed Use of Existing Facilities &New Construction: Measure F Funds City of San Jose Smart Start (Washington, Almaden, Lowell, &SJHA- proposed) Private Foundations Attachment #6 and District Map
