I.Title Accounting Specialist
II.Definition
To perform highly responsible technical accounting functions in the maintenance, report generation, verification and reconciliation of specialized accounting records. To use computer systems at a level necessary for the performance of the job. Responsible for accurate data collection and processing and completion of technical accounting reports according to established laws, codes, regulations and standards.
III.Examples of Duties
Maintains and enters data through the use of computer terminals. Under limited supervision, organizes, supervises, and coordinates budget data for input on state reports. Prepares and updates cash flow and other data necessary in the preparation of financial reports. Answers questions or concerns from administrators, clerical staff, and public requiring interpretation of complex laws, rules and regulations governing district budget.
IV.Distinguishing Characteristics
Positions in this job classification require accuracy and insight in general and specific accounting procedures. May be assigned to specialized accounting areas as needed (general ledger, payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable). Expert knowledge of accounting in the school environment.
V.Employment Standards
A.Knowledge of: State School Accounting Manual; Governmental Accounting; Effective recordkeeping practices and procedures; Systems analysis; School district organization; Education Code and Title V regulations; Use and applications of technology for accounting systems.
B.Ability to: Act independently and accurately to ensure compliance with mandatory reports. Perform mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy. Design computer spreadsheet models using formulas. Monitor, audit, reconcile, balance, research and analyze a variety of complex financial data and transactions. Assist with the training of new staff.
C. Education/Training/Experience: Any combination of experience and education equivalent to four or more years of significant, directly-related and progressive accounting experience and/or the education equivalent of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with major coursework in accounting, or a closely related field.
D.Licenses/Certificates: Valid California Driver's License.
