IV.Distinguishing Characteristics
The first two years of the three year program will assist, train, and prepare the Associate Teacher for the "student teaching" experience. In the first two years the duties and responsibilities will vary according to the experience the Associate Teacher may have already acquired from a position as an Instructional Associate in the schools. The goal is to involve the Associate Teacher in as many aspects of classroom instruction, lesson plan preparation, parent communication, and faculty involvement, as possible. The intent is to provide as many teaching and related experiences, as appropriate; however, this may mean that the beginning Associate, with limited experience, may only work as a 1:1 tutor or with a small group.
This training position will provide the Associate Teacher with opportunities to work along side a master teacher prior to entry into the credentialing program. The Associate Teacher will initially do many tasks normally associated with an instructional associate, but should soon begin to develop an understanding of the teaching strategies and classroom management responsibilities required of the teacher.
The Associate Teacher will develop skills in classroom management such as recordkeeping, grade recording, correction of work and other related management function.
The Associate Teacher will be responsible for attending at least 50 per cent of the Faculty Meetings in addition to Open House, and Back-to-School Night.
During the third year of the program, the Associate Teacher must participate in 50 per cent of the supervision activities required for teachers.
The Associate Teacher is distinguished from an Instructional Associate who is limited to correcting work, duplicating materials for the teacher, and instructing small groups or tutoring 1:1. The Associate Teacher is expected to work with the Master Teacher on such tasks as:
