Welcome to Reed Elementary School

A Proud California Distinguished School in SJUSD

News From the Office

Reed welcomes volunteers and requests families to volunteer at least four hours a month. New and returning parents, must complete the online volunteer packet at New volunteers must provide current TB test results and make an appointment with the San Jose Unified School District to be fingerprinted.

Thank you to everyone who donated paper and supplies to the Reed office. We are always looking for more parents to donate white copy paper as our school uses a lot of paper daily for our students and staff.

Thank you for everyone who started accounts on and loaded it with money for their students hot lunch. If you have not started an account for your student, please call the office for the student ID# and then log onto to add money into your students account.

Late lunches for students may be left in the box labeled “late drop off” that is next to the front office door. Students can come and pick up their late lunches during lunchtime. We will no longer call classrooms during instruction time to have them come get their lunches.

If your student will be absent for the day, please call the attendance hotline at (408) 264-5902 in the morning before school begins at 9 a.m. Our Attendance Clerk, Mrs. Nash will listen and record which students are absent for the day.

Please note the following:
*A doctor’s note may be required for extended illness
*Absences can be excused only within 5 days
*Three(3) Unexcused Absences will result in receiving an auto-generated Truancy Letter from the District
*Death in a family is excused:
-for one(1) day if the funeral takes place in California, for three(3) days if the funeral takes place out of state.
    - only if it is an immediate family member: mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, sibling(s) or any other family member in the student’s
immediate household (i.e. an uncle that lives in the same home with the student)
* Family Emergencies need to be reported in the office while explaining the situation, as they need to be approved by the principal

If you have any changes to your personal information, please contact the office ASAP so that you can receive important emails regarding any changes or reminders from our school office. You can update your contact information through the Parent Portal . If you plan to change schools or change your address, please contact the office to let us know where you are moving to and when the last date you will be attending Reed.

Reed has created an Amazon Wish List for parents who would like to purchase items for our school office. Please review and feel free to give by donating supplies to our office - Thank you!

Reed Elementary would like to create an environment for students that is healthy for all. If your student is sick, please keep them at home until they are healthy. As always, call the attendance line to report absence at (408) 284-6261. Please see this link to learn more about communicable diseases and which ones will have exposure notices be sent to the other students in the classroom. ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

We want to remind parents to be considerate of the neighborhood and to drive extra cautiously during these periods as students will be crossing streets. Please be extra careful when picking up and dropping off students as there are limited parking spaces. Please do not park in the staff parking lot or leave cars on idle to “wait” for your student to come out. Also, please refrain from dropping off students in the middle of the street, double parking while waiting, or blocking/parking the entrance of the staff parking lots. Consider coming a little bit earlier to drop off your students so that you will not be in a rush before the bell rings at 9 AM.

Students’ Safety Before and After School

For the safety of students, parents are not to drop students off at school prior to 30 minutes before the start of school, unless the student is involved in a regular school activity or community program. Similarly, parents are to arrange to have their student picked up right after school, unless the student is involved in a regular school activity, or community program, or is staying at the request of school personnel. The school will contact the parent when the school wishes to have the student remain after school. If your child is a bus rider, it is also the responsibility of the parent to make arrangements to meet the child at the designated bus drop off location at the designated time. It is unsafe for students to be left at school during unsupervised times and it is unreasonable to expect school office staff to supervise students on a regular basis. Parents who routinely fail to meet this responsibility will be notified by the school, may be contacted by the Student Services Department, and in the case of repeated occurrences, reported to the appropriate community agency (and may be cited for trespassing or loitering). In case of emergency, all children should be encouraged to go directly to the school office at any time before or after school.

Free & Reduced Lunch Program Application

Many of our families at Reed may qualify for participation in this program without even realizing it. If you feel your family’s household income is too high to qualify, we strongly encourage you to apply anyway. Many families have been surprised to learn that they qualify. At this time, 23% of our families participate in this program. If this number reaches 50%, the amount of government funding Reed receives annually greatly increases. Please check to see if you qualify: (If you need assistance or access to a computer please email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address))

Many companies in the area match donations that their employees make to schools. If you have made a donation to Reed school directly or to the Reed PTA and your company matches gifts, you can help get much needed funds for our school. Check with your employer to apply for a matching gift. Please contact Reed School if you need the Tax ID and Reed PTA’s Tax ID: 94-6173818. You will also need the date and amount of the donation you made.
