Two-Way Language Immersion is an academically based program in which the target language (Spanish) is used as the vehicle of instruction. Monthly thematic units integrate the curriculum, make the target language more meaningful to the student, and provide the student with enough exposure to practice, use and extend his/her vocabulary.
All units are introduced through literature. Teachers use a reciprocal-interactive approach, allowing students to actively participate in their second language growth. Other teaching techniques include cooperative learning, natural approach to second language acquisition, sheltered instruction, and activity-based small group instruction.
Kindergarten:: All subjects taught in Spanish; 40 minutes of English oral language development everyday.
First Grade: All subjects taught in Spanish; 40 minutes of English oral language instruction in the content area of social studies everyday.
Second Grade: All subjects taught in Spanish; 45 minutes of English oral language instruction in the content area of social studies everyday.
Third Grade: All subjects taught in Spanish; except for one hour daily of English instruction, a formal introduction of English reading and language arts.
Fourth Grade: All subjects taught in Spanish; except for 90 minutes daily of English reading and language arts, and P.E.
Fifth Grade: All subjects taught in Spanish, except for two hours daily of English language instruction in the areas of literature/language arts, social studies, and P.E.
Sixth Grade: Subjects taught in Spanish: Spanish language arts and social studies. Other subjects taught in English (literature/language arts, math, science, P.E.).
Seventh Grade: Subjects taught in Spanish: Spanish language arts, one semester of social studies and one semester of science. Other subjects taught in English (literature/language arts, math, one semester of social studies and one semester of science, P.E.).
Eighth Grade: Subjects taught in Spanish: Spanish language arts. Other subjects taught in English (literature/language arts, math, social studies, science, P.E.).
Our seventh and eighth graders receive high school credit for their Spanish classes.
