Faces of the Career Center…
Our school is fortunate enough to have Ms. Karina Ballin as a full time Academic/College Counselor. Ms. Ballin is the head of the College and Career Center and is head of student credit recovery.
Miss Lala Lassiter is the College and Career Technician that oversees the Career Center. She will assist with sign ups for CCOC, Credit Recovery and setting up school site visits from various colleges. She also assists with school site testing. She was born and raised in San Francisco and graduated from San Jose State University with a Bachelors in Sociology with a Criminology Concentration, minor in Recreation and Leisure. She has been working in education and with students for about 12 years. She worked in higher education for three years as an Admissions Specialist and College Advisor before coming to San Jose Unified. She is currently enrolled in a Masters program with hopes of attaining her M.S. in Family and Human Development. Her purpose is to help others reach their full potential and direct them to resources that lead them to success.
San Jose High is also lucky to have several college advising resource groups on campus:
By working collaboratively with partner schools and programs, Destination College Advising Corps will be a resource for all students in helping to make their post-secondary education goals possible. The DCAC Representatives for San Jose High are Cecilia Martinez and Paola Pérez.
The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are Federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post baccalaureate programs. TRIO also includes a training program for directors and staff of TRIO projects. This year our TRIO counselor is Miss Veronica Vasquez.
The Silicon Valley YWCA provides our campus with counselors here at San Jose High School, the goal of their program is to provide prevention and early intervention for teens, thereby giving them the greatest opportunity to thrive and limiting the harmful impact of social, emotional, and mental struggles. With accessible and compassionate YWCA counselors on campus, students have a safety net of professionals with whom to address their issues. Students must be referred and receive parent consent for YWCA services.
