Computer Lab
Teachers at Booksin School use the computer lab to teach technology skills and support district, state, and national curriculum standards. Kindergarten
Kindergarten students use the computer lab to review number concepts and letter sound associations. The multimedia program, Kid Pix, is used to reinforce those concepts as they find pictures that begin with a given letter or find a letter that represents a given sound. Other applications are also used to explore phonics and numbers. Kindergarteners in the computer lab learn to follow directions, log in and out of their computer files, and manipulate the mouse.
First Grade
First grade students begin word processing and become familiar with the keyboard, space bar, delete and shift keys. They practice writing and editing skills as they copy words and create simple sentences within a document. They write short stories which they illustrate and share with their class. First grade applications include programs to practice math facts and problem solving. Bookmarked sites on the internet are used to support classroom learning. Accelerated Reader, STAR and STAR Early Literacy are used to assess and monitor reading comprehension.
Second Grade
Second grade students use Appleworks and Kid Pix to compose, revise, edit, illustrate, and save their writing. They are developing standard sentence structure, subject-verb agreement, capitalization and other written language conventions as they publish original stories and poetry.
Third Grade
Third grade students begin keyboarding. The Type to Learn program teaches proper posture for keyboarding as well as the basic hand positions used on the keyboard. Student progress is monitored. Editing, revising, and publishing word processing documents skills are included at this level, and graphic tools are used to illustrate written work. Images and illustrations are imported into word processing documents. Applications provide practice with mathematical concepts such as place value and expanded number notation.
Fourth and Fifth GradeFourth and Fifth grade students refine their word processing and database skills, gaining speed and accuracy. Students use word processing applications for language arts assignments, expand their use of the editing features, cut and paste selections of text and graphics between documents, and use spell check. Written research reports are developed using properly cited references from various sources, including the Internet. Students use thesaurus and dictionary tools to revise and edit their work. Applications also reinforce the mathematical skills learned in the classroom. |
