March Newsletter

March 1, 2010

Dear Canoas Families,
The staff and I hope that this newsletter finds your family healthy and safe during this winter. We are looking forward to Parent Conferences, which will be from March 2-15.  Report cards will be sent home on Thursday, March 11th.  If you receive a request to make an appointment for a conference, please plan to be there for this important meeting to discuss any academic concerns your child’s teacher or you may have.  You will only receive an appointment request if your child is below grade level or if her/his teacher has concerns.  However, if you wish to meet with your child’s teacher, please request an appointment with her or him.

The countdown to STAR Testing has begun:  There are approximately 35 days until all Gr. 2-5 students will be taking the California Standardized Test (CST) from April 26 to May 7. This test provides the Academic Program Index (API) and Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) scores for the school.  Results of the test will not be available until August of 2010. Our current API score is 742 and AYP is 47% for ELA and 49% for Math.  Our goal is 800 on the API and 59% on the AYP for Math and Language Arts.

Canoas Walk-A-Thon: Our theme this year is “Eagles SOAR!”. This fabulous event will be on Friday, March 26th, from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm.  An information and donations packet was sent home on Tuesday. Our goal is that each student brings in $25 dollars for this important fundraiser, which raises money for the Home & School Club to provide funds for field trips, Music for Minors, Arts Vistas, technology, library and classroom supplies.  The event includes students walking to earn points for fantastic prizes such as face painting, crazy hair, ice cream and other treats.  Last year some students were able to walk more than 50 laps.  Your help is also needed on the morning of the Walk-A-thon and during the event.  Please come to school at 7:30 am that morning to help set up or contact the office if you would like to volunteer during the event. Let’s hope we can match or exceed the amount raised last year, which was $12,000.

Superintendent Don Iglesias’ Retirement: San Jose Unified Superintendent Don Iglesias announced his retirement effective June 30.  Mr. Iglesias has been Superintendent for 6 years, after first being employed as Deputy Superintendent in 2001.  Under his leadership SJUSD has continued to close the achievement gap, lower the percentage of dropouts, increase the number of students ready for college and maintain a balanced budget. The community will be kept informed of the process and timeline for the selection of the new superintendent.

Traffic Safety Concern: If you witness unsafe driving around Canoas, please report these incidences directly to the police at 277-8900.  We need your support in making traffic safer for our children at Canoas.

School Safety: Thank you for making the effort to get your child to school on time.  However, as daylight is arriving earlier in the morning, we are noticing that some parents are dropping students off and some students are coming to school earlier than necessary.  Please be reminded that there is no supervision in the morning until 7:30 am, so no students are to be on campus before that time.  Please do not drop your child off or allow your child to arrive to school before 7:30 am.  Thank you for your cooperation in this safety issue.

Looking ahead on the horizon, Kindergarten pre-registration begins April 1.  Children born on or before December 2, 2005 are eligible to be registered.  The pre-registration period ends on May 6, 2009.  Information packets are available in the office. If you want your child to attend Canoas, do not delay as space may be filled quickly.

Open House will be on Tuesday, April 6.

Spring Break will be from April 12-16. More info to follow.

When you visit Canoas, please be reminded of our Visitor Policy. All visitors on campus without a badge will be asked to sign in at the office.

Please, please leave a message on our absence line at 266-6283 if your child is going to be absent from

Sincerely,

Mr. An Nguyen,
Principal
