Willow Glen Elementary Celebrates Liliana Gomez 2010 California Bilingual Teacher of the Year

Last week a Press Release was sent from SJUSD regarding the announcement of Liliana Gomez as the CABE 2010 Teacher of the Year.  Willow Glen Elementary School, will have a special assembly, Friday morning, March 19, at 8:30 a.m. to celebrate their 1st grade teacher, Liliana Gomez. 

The “town” of Willow Glen is also celebrating Liliana!  You will find various specials honoring Liliana at local restaurants.  Ms. Gomez is a teacher in Willow Glen Elementary School’s Two-Way Spanish Bilingual Immersion Program.

San José Unified to Receive Honors at the CABE Conference

The thunderous applause heard coming this week coming from the San José McEnery Convention Center from the California Association of Bilingual Educators’ (CABE) will be for Liliana
Gomez, Willow Glen Elementary School’s First Grade Two-Way Immersion Teacher, Rosanna Mucetti, SJUSD’s Manager of Bilingual Education, and for Gardner Academy.

Student Activist + Cesar Chavez = Exemplary Teacher + Viva La Causa DVD

Please download press release which celebrates SJUSD’s Almaden Elementary School teacher, Wendy Greenfield, as her life evolves from student activist as she followed Cesar Chavez to model teacher at Almaden Elementary School.

Teaching units have been created around the experiences of the time and Friday night, March 5th, 5-7:00 p.m. at Historic Hoover Theatre there will be a special screening of Viva La Causa, which focuses on one of the formative events in the march for human rights - the grape strike and boycott led by César Chávez and Dolores Huerta in the 1960s.

Community Forum to Gather Input on Qualities of New Superintendent for SJUSD

With the impending retirement of San Jose Unified School District Superintendent, Don Iglesias on June 30, 2010, the District has contracted with Leadership Associates to conduct the search for a new Superintendent.

Leadership Associates will be hosting a community forum to gather input from the public as to the qualities and characteristics desired in a superintendent. The Community Forum will be held on Tuesday, March 9 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in the Board Room at San Jose Unified, 855 Lenzen Avenue, San Jose, 95126.

Journeys and Inspiration to be Shared with Burnett Female Students

San Jose, CA. San Jose Unified’s Burnett Academy is very grateful to Silicon Valley Leadership Group for coordinating a Women & Girls Leadership Summit on Friday, February 12, at Burnett Academy. The event will feature former HP-CEO and business leader Carly Fiorina, Rep. Jackie Speier and NBC Bay Area morning co-anchor Laura Garcia-Cannon.
More than 100 other women executives and community leaders will join 450 of the school’s 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls at the half-day event.

Lowell Elementary School Receives Title I Academic Achievement Award

Lowell Elementary School has received the Title I Academic Achievement Award.
The Title I Academic Achievement Award is given only to schools receiving federal Title I funds as authorized by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
To meet the criteria for this distinction, the school must demonstrate that all students are making significant progress toward proficiency on California’s academic content standards.

SJUSD Board President Veronica Lewis

San Jose Unified School District began the New Year with Veronica Grijalva Lewis as President of San Jose Unified’s Board of Education.  Mrs. Lewis was unanimously elected by her colleagues at the Board’s annual Organizational Meeting on December 10, 2009.  As a long time Board of Education Trustee, Veronica’s election as President insures that stability remains part of the climate of San Jose Unified.
