College Day San José 2011

College Day San José 2011 First Annual Event across Silicon Valley

SAN JOSE, CA.  Teachers, students, school staff members and business leaders across Silicon Valley will be talking about their educational journeys as they participate in College Day San José 2011, on September 30.

College Day San José 2011 is a citywide college-going effort spearheaded by the San José Unified School District and the First-Generation College Attainment Group.  Our theme for College Day San José 2011 is the Educational Journey.  The goal of College Day San José 2011 is for all people from all walks of life to share their journey with children, students, and co-workers, in order to celebrate, inspire, and promote college aspirations for all.  We are asking the community to participate, and join us in supporting every child in San José to believe in and realize their college dream.

Dr. Vincent Matthews, Superintendent of San Jose Unified, will be sharing his educational journey with two classrooms (schedule below). His first visit will to an 8th grade bilingual class at River Glen K-8.  The eighth graders will be hosting a panel of college students.  Dr. Matthews next visit will be to Pioneer to visit students enrolled in Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC). These students are 11th and 12th graders who have struggled with an earlier English class and are able to make up credits and be eligible for college.

Dr. Matthews strongly believes in College Day, stating, “I believe every child has the capacity to go to college.  And whether a child chooses to do so should not be linked to the zip code they live in, socio-economic background, ethnicity or whether or not their parents went to college.  We need to close the opportunity gap for all students.  There is too much at stake if we don’t.”

Across the day and throughout the Valley, classrooms, hallways and doors will be decorated with college banners, educational posters and inspirational messages, encouraging students to aspire to go to college.  Teachers will begin their day sharing their educational journeys; college fairs will fill the quads at lunch time and college pencils will be in the hands of 1st graders.

College Day San José is a regional event supported by the Mayor’s Office, the County Office of Education, San Jose Unified School District, San Jose State University, UC Berkeley – Center for Educational Partnerships, Silicon Valley Leadership Group, Applied Materials and many other schools and community based organizations such as Downtown College Prep, and Kids in Common.
