Mission Statement

Allen at Steinbeck K-8 School mission is to provide our diverse student population with knowledge and skills required to achieve academic excellence and the skills necessary to become productive, responsible citizens.

Values: We are:

  * Enhancing student opportunities to think critically, creatively, to learn to solve problems individually and collectively.

    Allen at Steinbeck will prepare K-8 students from a diverse community with the knowledge and skills required to achieve academic excellence along with the skills necessary to become productive, responsible leaders in our community.

  * Academic achievement, critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving (individually and collectively) will be fostered from Kindergarten through 8th grade.
  * A positive school climate will be promoted, enhanced, and expanded.
  * An effective school community, based on trust, credibility, and confidence, will be enhanced through service learning experiences from Kindergarten through 8th grade.
  * Staff training will support the development of a professional teaching staff that is willing and able to ensure the success of all students.
  * School, Parent, and Community Partnerships will continue to be promoted and will be expanded to include the parents of the middle grade students.

River Glen offers K-8 students the unique and exciting opportunity of learning to communicate naturally in two languages, Spanish and English. Our goal is to educate students who are bilingual and biliterate and enable them to meet the challenges of a global society. Within a nine-year time frame, students acquire the skills to read, write, speak, listen, and think in two languages. Every student, staff member, and parent is involved in the immersion program and its philosophy. The development of fluency and literacy in two languages requires several years of continuous participation in the immersion program. Enrollment occurs primarily at the kindergarten level. In order to make an informed decision, parents are required to attend an orientation meeting prior to choosing River Glen on the selection form. The River Glen Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Program has received a national award of Academic Excellence and a California award as a Distinguished School.


The middle school program at River Glen offers students in grades 6-8 the unique and exciting opportunity to continue with their studies of communicating and becoming academically successful in Spanish and English. Our goal is to educate students who are bilingual and biliterate and enable them to meet the challenges of a global society. Every student, staff member and parent is very involved in the immersion program and its philosophy. New entering middle school students to River Glen must already be bilingual (have participated in Spanish Immersion or bilingual programs in elementary school). They must be orally fluent in both Spanish and English, and have the experience and ability to read and write in both languages. Parents are encouraged to call the school prior to selection if they are interested in this program for their child. River Glen’s Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Program has received a national award of Academic Excellence. River Glen is a California Distinguished School.

Burnett Academy’s smaller size will enable your child to transition smoothly from an elementary school environment into this tight-knit campus community.  Respected teachers and staff have integrated the rigorous, accelerated instruction of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IB-MYP) into every subject area.  The curriculum actively encourages students to become aware of the links between different areas of their educational experience.  Additionally, this campus has partnered with San Jose High Academy to implement two learning clusters: Pre-Engineering and Multilingual Communications.  Students are assured of significant opportunities to participate in integrated academics, social clubs, and sports.

Castillero Middle School’s staff, students, and parents are proud of their comprehensive Academic, Visual and Performing Arts program. Castillero has a reputation for academic excellence based on a well-defined curriculum of academic and elective classes, a strong faculty and support staff, a committed and supportive community, and eager, active and involved students. Dynamic elective courses offer beginning, intermediate, advanced, and performance opportunities to challenge students as they explore and increase their skills in vocal music, instrumental music, dance, visual arts, and theatre arts. The technology curriculum includes classes in digital photography and digital media. Expanding technology opportunities include a media center research lab, math lab, and laptop computers for classrooms. Self-esteem, responsibility, tolerance, and teamwork serve as the cornerstone of our school-wide programs.

A National Blue Ribbon School, Bret Harte houses a learning community that motivates and supports all students to achieve at the highest levels.  With a strong foundation of basic and advanced skills, students learn to formulate and express ideas through writing, speaking, and various media. Our goal is to produce creative and critical thinkers who are contributing members of our community. Teachers in all subject areas participate in staff development training to work with students to improve their academic performance.  Bret Harte is a place where kids are loved and where kids love to learn.  In partnership with our parent community, a staff of extremely caring and competent professionals provides a structured and sequential program rich in basic and advanced math, literature, science, history, geography, technology, and the arts.  Students and staff respect each other.  A safe, orderly environment is maintained in each classroom and throughout the campus.

31 - Herbert Hoover Middle School

Hoover Middle School, an Advanced Design Technology Magnet, offers an intensive instructional program using the latest tools of technology. Awarded funding from the US Office of Education, Magnet Schools Assistance Program, Hoover’s staff has designed a new program that encourages students to achieve, using an electronic platform. All students are engaged in this rigorous and technological program.  Examples of learning will include electronic book publishing, podcasting, blogging, digital animation, documentary film making, digital music, and as always, productions from the choral, orchestral, instrumental music, theatre arts, dance, and visual arts departments. Additionally, students who have participated in Spanish immersion or bilingual programs in elementary school are offered a two-way bilingual program to become orally fluent in both Spanish and English and have the ability to read and write in both languages.  The After-School All-Stars program, clubs, intramural sports and activities round out a stellar
middle school.

32 - John Muir Middle School

John Muir offers an exciting and unique middle school experience, which includes quality academic curriculum with an emphasis on integrated technology and a multitude of activities that engage the entire community. John Muir enjoys a positive school culture where the focus is the “whole child”. Sixth grade students learn in a Language Arts/Social Studies core program. Those who have met reading requirements take an elective, including computers, digital music, art, Spanish, and leadership. All sixth graders are assessed at the beginning of the school year in math for placement in a pre-algebra class. Seventh graders take the language arts and social studies core with electives in computers, drafting, art, drama, dance, digital music, and Spanish. Eighth graders enjoy junior engineering, algebra, geometry, college outreach, community building, leadership, and social growth in preparation for high school. After-school clubs are available for all students in art, music, computers, hiking, and drama.  Every student participates in our College and Career program.  We host a Career Day in May to expose all students to an array of professions and careers. PTSA and ASB support our College Going Culture by sponsoring our field trips.

We are a unique learning community focused on engaging students in intellectually challenging academics, athletics, the arts, and service opportunities.  We empower our students to discover and develop new talents and skills in courses such as Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1-2, Geometry, Algebra 3-4/Trigonometry, Solar Energy, three levels of Spanish and French, Choir/Concert Choir, Band, Drums, Speech and Debate, Art, and year-long courses in science at each grade level.  Athletically, we are part of three athletic leagues, and participate in soccer, softball, wrestling, volleyball, basketball, track, cross-country, and flag football.  Last year our 8th grade basketball team won the league championship.  Also, we have a wide array of clubs:  Campus Life, CJSF, cheerleading, Applause Concert Choir, drama, Friends of Rachel, Garden Club, Leadership, Math Club, STRUT, ASB (student council), robotics, yearbook/journalism. Students may attend After-School All-Stars for homework help, sports, and enrichment.  Students travel to France, Spain, New York City, Washington, D.C., and Boston to experience history and culture. We enjoy strong parent participation and support, especially in PTA and the Willow Glen Foundation.
