Empire Gardens Elementary School is focused on student achievement. Our goal is that in 2010, Empire Gardens will be the first downtown school to become a California Distinguished School. We emphasize literacy by adhering to District-adopted materials, testing students four times a year to measure progress, minimizing interruptions to instruction, and hiring three literacy coaches to work with teachers to improve student learning. A comprehensive Academic Language Acquisition (ALA) program is available for Spanish speaking English Language Learners. We also have a partnership with Partners In School Innovation, which is a non-profit organization working with our school to help us close the achievement gap. Student learning and instruction is enhanced through the use of technology. Teachers and support staff work together with parents and community to assure that each child reaches his/her highest level of achievement. Empire Gardens is home to a San Jose After School (SJAS) program.
