Basic Information:
1. Classified job vacancies are posted at all San José Unified School District main offices and schools as well as in the Human Resources Office and on the district web site (http://www.sjusd.org) and EdJoin.
2. Classified job vacancies are posted several times throughout the month (varies during holidays & vacation periods).
3. Applications are accepted only when a position is announced. Applications are not accepted after 5:00 P.M. on the Deadline Date of the vacancy announcement (usually Friday).
Procedure:
a. Complete a Classified Employment Application for each position in which you are interested.
b. Follow the directions on the Classified Job Vacancy Announcements to apply for Current Open positions. Note Any Requirements, especially required tests.
Requirements must be met prior to the closing date of the vacancy. Call 535-6139, for the testing schedule.
4. All new employees, whether permanent or non-regular/short-term (including substitutes),must be processed through Human Resources before beginning work.
a. I-9 Immigration & Control Act of 1986:
Before an applicant can work he/she must produce Original Documents to prove that he/she is authorized to work in the United States. A list of acceptable documents of proof is available from Human Resources.
b. Fingerprinting, Tuberculosis Testing, Employment Packet:
All new employees must be fingerprinted and be cleared by the Department of Justice (for background check of criminal convictions), tested for TB, and complete an employment packet prior to work.
Specific Position Information:
1.Clerical Positions: (Type, use computer, answer phones, greet public, etc.)
Before applying for a permanent position, you must pass a clerical test or a promotional clerical test (70%). Any requirement stated on the job description for a permanent position must also be met. (See additional substitute information below - #6.)
2.Instructional Associates Positions: (Work with children/teachers)
Before applying for a permanent position, you must pass the Instructional Associate Test which meets the No Child Left Behind requirements set forth by the federal government. This tests basic skills of English Language, Mathematics, and the Ability to Assist. Any requirement stated on the job description for a permanent position must also be met. [See Bilingual Positions (#3), if applicable.]
3.Bilingual Positions: (Clerical or Instructional Related, 2.5%-5% additional salary.)
Before applying for a position requiring bilingual, the specific language assessment test must be passed, OR, you must have been designated as a bilingual permanent employee in the 1982/83 school year to receive 2.5% additional salary. Additional requirements must be met for the biliterate 2.5% additional salary.
4.Custodial Services: (Custodians/Grounds)
Before applying for a permanent position, you must meet any requirement stated on the job description. Testing, if required, is done by the Human Resources Department.
Short-Term laborers are used by the Custodial Services Department as needed and are paid by the hour. Contact Custodial Services Department at 535-6166, to see if there are any openings. Salary information below.
5.Food Services:
The Food Services Department gives a basic skills quiz to prospective applicants for substitute positions. Contact the department to take this quiz; see “Locations and Numbers”, below. Passing the quiz enables a person to be a substitute. Before applying for a permanent position, you must also pass the Food Services Promotional Test (70%) given by the Human Resources Department and meet any requirement stated on the job description and announcement.
6.Substitute Information:
There is a continuous need for substitutes (short-term and “on-call” employees) in all areas. All substitutes are paid from time sheets signed by the employee and submitted to the Payroll Department by the school/department. Payday is the 10th of the following month.
Substitute pay rates: Clerical, $12.15/hr.; Instructional Associate, $11.56/hr.; short-term labor, $12.86/hr.; and Food Service, $10.31/hr.
Substitutes/non-regulars should update their current availability, especially after being released from a long term assignment, by calling the Human Resources Department at 535-6549.
