> Horace Mann Federal Magnet Elementary School
General Information
As the oldest school in San Jose, Horace Mann School has a distinguished history of serving the diverse and changing population of downtown San Jose. The Vision of the School: “One School. One Community. Connected.” has motivated our parents and community members to become involved stakeholders who are committed to the school, its mission and the success of each student. Our parent and School community organization, TEAM Horace, organizes events and activities throughout the year for our school site. We commence with a Welcome Back to School Ice Cream Social the Saturday before school starts. This is a great opportunity to meet up with the school community as we start off the new school year. Other events and activities include: Back to School Night, Spirit Week, Walk-A-Thon, Beautification Days, Family Movie Nights, Holiday Revues, Multi-Cultural Festival, School wide Flea Market, Staff Appreciation Luncheon, and a Volunteer Appreciation Tea. After School programs have included Children’s Musical Theater, Starting Arts and Mexican Folkloric Dance. The focus at Horace Mann School is on the hearts as well as the minds of our students and staff. In addition to academic needs, we address social, physical, emotional, and cultural needs. The Husky Way is one of the ways we bridge the connection between students, parents, staff, and community. This is reinforced daily in classrooms and in our weekly Monday morning school assembly when students and staff join to recite the Husky Way Pledge in English and Spanish, followed by the national Pledge of Allegiance. Following this assembly, Husky Heroes from each classroom are photographed and each Friday receive the honor of having lunch with the principal. The Husky Way comprises the characteristics in the PYP Student Profile related to students being aware of and sensitive to the experience of others. |
