The primary mission and purpose at Allen Elementary School is student success, student achievement, and student performance. We are aware that children were not tailored for us, but, rather, we for them by virtue of our background, training, and experience. The curriculum and instructional programs are designed to provide students with comprehensive and progressive instruction in all academic areas. We accommodate to individual differences through the process of assessing needs, establishing teaching objectives, and providing for the best curriculum and instruction in the classroom.

2 - Almaden Elementary

Exciting “meaning-centered” instruction coupled with a genuine commitment to children makes Almaden an exceptional environment for learning. High expectations and rigorous curriculum in both English and Spanish challenge our students to stretch their minds and become the best students they can be. Our ALA program is designed to meet the needs of English language learners. Our Science Enrichment program provides Environmental Science through gardening, recycling and oceanography. It is augmented by Pioneer High School’s Bio Site Lab Science experience sponsored by the Children’s Discovery Museum and Pioneer’s Community Service Learning component. Our PTA and ELAC provide our regular curriculum with Art projects and funding for computers and technical support. MESA, in partnership with San Jose State University, provides students with an extended-day curriculum that involves hands-on science and engineering building projects, such as robotics and other engineering science technology concepts. In addition, three before and after school extended learning programs are in place.

Bachrodt Academy students receive a challenging and integrated academic program. Students develop the skills and understandings to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. High academic achievement and appropriate behavior are expected. Our staff guarantees personalized instruction, as well as assured support for all students. All regular services and curricula are available to all students, including Bilingual and Special Education programs. Our ALA (Bilingual) program is designed to meet the needs of English language learners. The Bachrodt staff, parents, and business community work together to provide the best educational learning environment for our students.

In May 2000, Booksin was named a California Distinguished School. Booksin is noted for high academic standards, commitment to excellence, parent involvement, and a top quality teaching staff. Students regularly score among the highest in the state. Teams of teachers and parents support and implement a balanced, rigorous, standards-based curriculum. Our program also provides for character education through LifeSkills and Cornerstone Project. The technology lab, Lifelab garden, and vocal music enrich the core curriculum. Lesson strategies target learning differences and promote critical thinking, acceleration, problem solving, and challenging tasks. We teach responsible decision-making and model the LifeLong Learning Standards.

Welcome to Canoas, a 2004 California Distinguished School. The Canoas staff is committed to implementing an intensive, well balanced, standards-based curriculum to ensure each child’s academic success. Teachers plan monthly curriculum outlines highlighting the essential skills students are expected to master for academic excellence. Monthly assessments are given to ensure that instruction is comprehensive, stimulating and targets learning differences, acceleration and goal setting. Teachers and parents work together to create a learning environment that has high expectations, allows students to reach their full potential, teaches responsibility and pride and models learning as a lifelong adventure. Our program also includes parent tutors, lunch and after-school homework centers and optional after-school enrichment classes. 8 - Empire Gardens Elementary

Empire Gardens Elementary School provides an emphasis on literacy, and, through the implementation of the “Success For All” (SFA) reading program, helps all students read at or above grade level by the end of third grade. The SFA program is research based, includes a highly structured tutorial component, and encourages the use of best teaching practices, as well as providing opportunities for parent involvement and training. A comprehensive Academic Language Acquisition (ALA) program is available for Spanish speaking English Language Learners. Students’ learning and instruction is enhanced through the use of technology. Teachers and support staff work together with parents and community to assure that each child reaches his/her highest level of achievement.
We occupied our beautiful new building in August, 2004.

Ernesto Galarza opened in September 2001 to serve a new neighborhood of families. Our school’s mission is to provide a safe, positive and nurturing environment where all children achieve their greatest potential and experience the joy of learning. Our students are taught the purpose of learning and developing life learning skills through our challenging and integrated academic program. Our ALA program is designed to meet the needs of English language learners. We implement programs such as Success for All, Accelerated Reader, and Step Up To Writing in English and in Spanish. Additional programs include PeaceBuilders, Cornerstone, and SPARK PE.

A Professional Development School

Gardner is about continuous improvement. To build on our student-oriented continuous improvement and learning focus, Gardner is moving toward becoming a Professional Development School, starting with the 2005-2006 school year. A Professional Development School (PDS) is a functioning, exemplary school with five major purposes: (1) to maximize student academic achievement; (2) to develop, test, and refine effective learning practices through focused study; (3) to provide rigorous professional development experiences for teachers and staff; (4) to provide a rigorous clinical setting for teacher induction; and (5) to share learnings and best practices with parents, District teachers, and staff. As a Professional Development School we will work in partnership with universities to serve as an exemplary site to enhance student achievement, parental involvement and staff development. Diverse strands of instruction, including Two-Way Language Immersion, Academic Language Acquisition, and Structured English Immersion, continue to expand Gardner students’ opportunities for success.
