River Glen K-81088 Broadway San Jose, CA 95125 408-535-6240 River Glen offers K-8 students the unique and exciting opportunity of learning to communicate naturally in two languages, Spanish and English. Our goal is to educate students who are bilingual and biliterate and enable them to meet the challenges of a global society. Within a nine-year time frame, students acquire the skills to read, write, speak, listen, and think in two languages. Every student, staff member, and parent is involved in the immersion program and its philosophy. The development of fluency and literacy in two languages requires several years of continuous participation in the immersion program. Enrollment occurs primarily at the kindergarten level. In order to make an informed decision, parents are required to attend an orientation meeting prior to choosing River Glen on the selection form. The River Glen Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Program has received a national award of Academic Excellence and a California award as a Distinguished School. The middle school program at River Glen offers students in grades 6-8 the unique and exciting opportunity to continue with their studies of communicating and becoming academically successful in Spanish and English. Our goal is to educate students who are bilingual and biliterate and enable them to meet the challenges of a global society. Every student, staff member and parent is very involved in the immersion program and its philosophy. New entering middle school students to River Glen must already be bilingual (have participated in Spanish Immersion or bilingual programs in elementary school). They must be orally fluent in both Spanish and English, and have the experience and ability to read and write in both languages. Parents are encouraged to call the school prior to selection if they are interested in this program for their child. 28 - Peter Burnett Academy850 North 2nd Street San José, CA 95112 408-535-6267 Burnett Integrated Technology in the IB Middle Years Magnet Program Burnett has adopted the curriculum of the Middle Years Program of the International Baccalaureate Organization, a rigorous accelerated program that focuses on five Areas of Interaction: Approaches to Learning, Community Service, Environment, Health and Social Education, and Homo Faber. These five areas and technology are integrated into every subject area. The Middle Years Program follows a curriculum that is approved and prescribed by the International Baccalaureate Organization and also incorporates state, district, and national standards. Part of the excitement of being at Burnett is the strong technology program financed largely by a three-year federal Magnet Schools Assistance grant. Additional excitement is provided by instrumental and vocal music, as well as art, the anchors of the Fine Arts program. The Academy is proud of its community support that guarantees students feedback through a positive reinforcement program. 29 - Castillero Middle School6384 Leyland Park Drive San José, CA 95120 408-535-6385 Castillero Academic, Visual and Performing Arts Magnet Castillero Middle School is proud of their comprehensive Academic, Visual and Performing Arts program. Castillero Middle School has a reputation for academic excellence based on a well-defined curriculum of academic and elective classes, a strong faculty and support staff, a committed and supportive community, and eager, active and involved students. Dynamic elective courses offer beginning, intermediate, advanced, and performance opportunities to challenge students as they explore and increase their skills in vocal music, instrumental music, dance, visual arts, and theatre arts. The technology curriculum includes classes in word processing and computer-assisted drawing. Expanding technology opportunities include a media center research lab, math lab, and laptop computers for classrooms. 30 - Bret Harte Middle School7050 Bret Harte Drive San José, CA 95120 408-535-6270 A National Blue Ribbon School, Bret Harte houses a learning community that motivates and supports all students to achieve at the highest levels. With a strong foundation of basic and advanced skills, students learn to formulate and express ideas through writing, speaking, and various media. Our goal is to produce creative and critical thinkers whom are contributing members of our community. Teachers in all subject areas participate in staff development training to work with students to improve their academic performance. Bret Harte is a place where kids are loved and where kids love to learn. In partnership with our parent community, a staff of extremely caring and competent professionals provides a structured and sequential program rich in basic and advanced math, literature, science, history, geography, technology, and the arts. 31 - Herbert Hoover Middle School1635 Park Avenue San José, CA 95126 408-535-6274 Hoover Academic, Visual, Performing and Technical Arts Magnet For over 70 years, Hoover has maintained a tradition of academic excellence which has been more recently coupled with a rigorous and exciting magnet program. As part of a K-12 Magnet strand, the school offers students rich opportunities in instrumental and vocal music, strings, dance, drama, technical theater, computer, and visual arts. In the spring semester of 2004, we completed the construction of the Historic Hoover Arts Center, using generous City, foundation, business and magnet schools support. In addition to our challenging courses in language arts, foreign language, reading and literature, mathematics, robotics, science, and social sciences, there are clubs and other activities also available to students. 32 - John Muir Middle School1260 Branham Lane San José, CA 95118 408-535-6281 Muir Integrated Technology in the Arts & Sciences Magnet John Muir offers an exciting curriculum and a quality academic experience with an emphasis on the arts, sciences, and integrated technology. Steinbeck Middle School’s magnet laptop program and students will combine with Muir in the fall of 2005. Students at Muir strive to score at or above the national average in reading and math. Limited English proficient students are given academic assistance with support in their primary language whenever possible. Sixth grade students learn in a Language Arts/Social Studies core program. After-school clubs/classes are available in art, music, robotics, computers, and drafting. Seventh grade students take the language arts and social studies core with electives in computers, drafting, art, and Spanish. Eighth grade students enjoy junior engineering, algebra, geometry, college outreach, community building, leadership, and social growth in preparation for high school. 33 - Willow Glen Middle School2105 Cottle Avenue San José, CA 95125 408-535-6277 Willow Glen focuses on academic excellence and college readiness for all students by providing a strong academic curriculum supported by core instructional teams at each grade level. Electives include art, band, choir, computer technology, French, journalism and yearbook, leadership, robotics, speech, solar energy science and Spanish. Advanced math and foreign language courses are offered, as are support courses in reading and math. Additional academic support and student activities are also provided through the After-Schools All-Stars program.
