Gunderson Integrated Technology in the Arts & Sciences Magnet

Gunderson High School is a technological, collaborative, college-preparatory community that achieves academic excellence, celebrates individuality and respects diversity. We offer a challenging curriculum that is regularly evaluated to incorporate the latest technology. We are a performance-based learning environment utilizing project-based service learning integrated with advanced technological applications in an interdisciplinary laboratory environment. Gunderson’s focus is on the intellectual and problem-solving growth of each student. Through a partnership with Apple Computers, each student at Gunderson High School is eligible to receive an Apple iBook laptop computer for his/her use at both home and school. Advanced Placement course offerings at Gunderson include English Literature, Spanish Literature, Biology, U.S. History, American Government, and Art. We are currently the recipients of a three-year competitive grant from the Magnet Schools Assistance Program of the U.S. Office of Education to fully develop a new magnet program, Integrated Technology in the Arts & Sciences, in grades 9-12.

With an outstanding record of student achievement, Leland was named a National Blue Ribbon School and a Very High Performing School based on the California Academic Performance Index. The strength of Leland comes from rigorous academic standards, motivated students, supportive parents and community, and a highly-qualified staff.
With a communications specialty theme, Leland has the number two ranked Speech and Debate program in the nation, Leland offers unique opportunities in languages and media communication, while thoroughly preparing students for higher education. Over ninety percent of Leland students go on to college. The following reform goals are being implemented: improved student achievement; high standards and mastery of rigorous academic material; varied forms of assessment; a personalized and safe learning environment; a curriculum integrating technology and real life experiences.

Lincoln Academic, Visual and Performing Arts Magnet

Lincoln offers challenging academic courses, including Advanced Placement classes in U.S. History, English, American Government, chemistry, biology, physics, Spanish, Latin, French, studio art drawing, general studio art, music theory, and calculus. Additionally, Lincoln provides numerous opportunities for creative expression and cultural appreciation. Students develop their artistic talents and a personal sense of worth. As the culminating level of the K-12 AVPA Magnet Program, Lincoln’s courses facilitate the integration of academics with the visual and performing arts. In-depth programs are offered in choral and instrumental music, art, drama, dance, and theater arts. Lincoln has earned the National Blue Ribbon Award, two California Distinguished School Awards, and the Hispanic Magazine and Ryder System Inc., Top Five Schools of Excellence Award. Furthermore, in 2002, Lincoln’s Mock Trial team won its second consecutive California State Championship and also placed fourth in the National Competition. Finally, in 2004, Lincoln received the 21st Century Schools of Distinction Award for Community Partnerships.

37 - Pioneer High School

Pioneer is an outstanding comprehensive high school offering a high quality and well-rounded education to students with a variety of interests and ambitions. All academic classes at Pioneer are UC/CSU acceptable. There is a full complement of Accelerated, Honors and Advanced Placement classes in each academic subject area. Science is a special focal point offering a range of challenging, interesting classes in our indoor/outdoor laboratories. Service Learning, another unique emphasis, is incorporated into the sophomore social studies curriculum, culminating in a project which connects students’ learning to their place in the community. There is a wide variety of clubs and sport teams, including the award-winning robotics, dance and spirit teams. Band and vocal music offer beginning and advanced classes, as do fine arts and drama. Drama stages several productions each year. Parents are a very active part of Pioneer campus life, working through PTSA and several Boosters organizations. Pioneer has been designated a California Distinguished School.

San Jose High Academy Integrated Technology in the IB Middle Years & Diploma Magnet Programs

San Jose High was founded in 1863 and is one of California’s oldest high schools. It is a small comprehensive high school with 1000 students, grades 9-12. San Jose High offers the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, a rigorous pre-university certification for academically talented students and the last two years of the Middle Years Program, an age appropriate curriculum that provides a framework of academic challenge, enrichment, and life skills for students in grades 6-10. Our magnet has been successful in providing challenging academic programs to a truly diverse student population. Technology is used extensively throughout the instructional program. There are four portable computer labs, each containing sixteen iBooks™ for use in individual classrooms, as well as regular instructional computer labs. San Jose High Academy has received local, state, and national recognition as an exemplary International Baccalaureate magnet school with many outstanding students, staff, and programs.

Willow Glen High School is a College/University Center which provides outstanding academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular programs, as well as sustained college entrance advising and personal guidance support. Beginning in the 2004-05 school year, Willow Glen in partnership with San Jose City College has offered a unique UC/CSU Transfer Degree University Jump Start Program. Students who successfully complete the rigorous 9-12 grade curriculum graduate from high school with a full year of transferable CSU/UC college credit. This unique program accepts up to 60 students who successfully complete the application process, which includes a college readiness academic assessment. At Willow Glen, students excel in a full range of Advanced Placement and Honors courses, drama, musical theater, choir, band, visual arts, and athletics. Our school enjoys the support of an active Parents’ Club, Athletic Boosters, Arts Boosters, and a community Foundation. Additional support for learning and research is provided by our state-of-the-art Library/Technology Center and Homework Center which is open weekdays until 6:00 p.m.
