Accelerated Reader Quizzes

What is Accelerated Reader?

AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice.  Students select books from the school library at their own level and read at their own pace.  When they finish reading students take a short quiz on the computer to test their comprehension.  Passing the quiz shows that students have understood what was read.  AR gives both students and teacher feedback based on the quiz results.

Children using AR choose their own books to read within the reading level goals set by their teachers.  The reading level goal is based on the results of the STAR reading test, class performance and previous AR quizzes. Teachers may help your child to choose books at an appropriate reading that are interestering without being too challenging.

If your child does not do well on the quiz, the teacher may encourage your child to choose another book at a lower level, read the book at least two times, pair your child with another student for shared reading, ask your child to write a summary of the book before taking the quiz.

Each semester teachers will assign three AR goals:  book level, point level (based on book level) and an accuracy average level of 85% on all quizzes.

Galarza and Hammer are AR Enterprise Schools which gives us access to over
110,000 quizzes.  Students can take quizzes on books read at school, at home or from the public library.

What is the ATOS book level?

Book levels are determined using the ATOS readability formula to evaluate the difficulty of the text.  For example, a book level of 4.5 means the test could likely be read independently by a student whose reading skills are at the level of a typical fourth grader in the fifth month of school.  The content of the book, however, may not be appropriate.  The interest level will evaluate the appropriateness of the content.

What is the interest level?

To help you select book most appropriate for your child/ren, AR quizzes are divided into three Interest Levels:  Lower Grade (LG) K-3, Middle Grades (MG) 4-8, and Upper Grades (UG) 9-12.  Interest Levels reflect the judgement of the book’s publishers and the opinions of the AR professionals.  However, the final decision on whether the content of the book is appropriate for a particular child is left to the parents and teachers.
