About Maria Montessori

2007 will be the 100 Year Anniversary of the first “Children’s House”

Maria Montessori was the first woman physician to graduate from the University of Rome in 1894.  She became interested in education while working with children in a psychiatric clinic.  Montessori was told the “challenged” patients she was working with were unteachable.  Incredibly her patients did learn and some outscored students in the typical school system of the time.
In 1907, Montessori was asked to run a child care center in the slums of Italy.  She called it “A Children’s House”.  Under her care and guidance, the students within her school became successful, self motivated, independent learners.  Montessori received international acclaim and began to open new schools and train teachers throughout the world.
