The National Junior Honor Society is a club of 8th grade students who help out the community while having fun.  NJHS membership is offered each Spring to incoming 8th graders who have a cumulative 3.5 GPA for middle school.  In addition, the students must also go through a rigorous application process which reviews a the students’ service, leadership, scholarship, character, and citizenship experience. The new members who are accepted to NJHS participate in an Induction Ceremony in May that also recognizes our graduating 8th graders.

During the school year, the students do many projects which benefit John Muir, the City of San Jose, as well as many other community organizations.  In the first semester the students do a group community service project on the John Muir campus.  During the second semester, each student is required to participate in a 25+ hour service learning project.  Some of the past projects have included recycling, cleaning up parks & beaches, tutoring elementary students, working with children with disabilities, and assisting the elderly.
