Language Arts and Social Studies, Grade 7
Language Arts, Grade 8

My name is Mary Filipek, and I teach Language Arts and Social Studies for grades 7 and 8.

This is my third year here at John Muir, and I am excited to continue teaching in such a fun and diverse community.  I have taught all grade levels, sixth through eighth, in various capacities including Medieval world history, reading skills, writing applications, and more.

I am a graduate of UC Santa Cruz, where I received a BA in American History. (Go Banana Slugs!) I subsequently attended San Jose State University, where I earned single-subject credentials in both English and Social Science.

I like to spend my free time working with my hands.  I enjoy cooking, and handicrafts such as painting and crochet.  I love reading, and as such I try to foster a love of reading in all my students.  I am an animal lover, and I enjoy the outdoors.

I love teaching!  I enjoy creating diverse lessons which are fun and engaging, while also addressing standards and preparing my students for their future academic experiences.  I try to incorporate a variety of teaching styles in my classroom which engage multiple learning styles, address students with special needs, appropriately engage gifted and talented students, and cultivate lifelong learners.
