Social Science Overview

The Social Science Department has a balanced, integrated curriculum which is enriched by art, music and literature. The history courses reflect the state framework, with an emphasis on chronology and geography. A variety of cultures are studied, and assignments in all classes are designed to lead to global awareness, appreciation of diverse cultural achievements and empathic responses. Infusion of current events, global and civic problems, and involvement of students in city council meetings, court proceedings and board of education meetings lead to the development of civic values and democratic principles. through a variety of teaching strategies, modeling, student presentations, and instructional resources, students attain the thinking, reasoning, research, and communication skills necessary for effective participation in a democratic society.
The minimum State requirement for students is the successful completion of two years of classes in the social sciences. For graduation, San Jose Unified School District requires students to pass 3 1/2 years of classes in the social sciences. Lincoln High School requires students to take the following 4 years of classes, based on the state framework:

9th Grade: 9th Grade Social Science(Area Studies, Law- Related Education)
SDAIE classes available

l0th Grade: World History/Cultures--two semesters
Accelerated, Grade Level, SDAIE

11th Grade: United States History-two semesters
Advanced Placement, Grade Level, SDAIE

12th Grade: American Government--one semester
Advanced Placement, Grade Level, SDAIE
Economics--one semester
Honors, Grade Level, SDAIE
