Philosophy
The ESL program at Lincoln High School is built around three main goals:
1. Learn English
2. Achieve Academic Success
3. Develop a Positive Self-Image
English Courses Available
We have four levels of English for second language learners:
* Beginners ESL 1-2
* Intermediate ESL 3-4
* Advanced ESL 5-6 and ESL 7-8
* SDAIE English 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8
We use placement tests and entrance criteria to determine the level at which a student should enter the program.
ESL Course Descriptions
Beginners:
* two classes of English every day
* emphasis on speaking and listening communication
* introduction to reading and writing in English
* study of every day / survival language and situations
* topics include: classroom, colors, numbers, shapes, time, home and family, shopping, food and drink, clothing, the body, health, community, services, hobbies
Intermediate:
* two classes of English every day
* emphasis on speaking and discussion in English
* development of reading and writing in English
* introduction to some simplified literature
* development of research skills for individual and group projects
* themes include: People, Nature, Growing up, Greek Mythology, Folktales
Advanced:
* two classes of English ESL 5-6 every day and one class every day for ESL 7-8
* focus on skills and grammar development
* emphasis on reading and discussion
* emphasis on writing a three paragraph essay or report
* focus on major forms of literature grouped thematically
* topics include: Identity, Relationships, Dreams, Mysteries, Conflicts and Work
SDAIE English:
* one class of English every day
* focus on skills development
* emphasis on reading and discussion
* emphasis on writing a five paragraph essay or report
* focus on literature (grade level standards)
Content Area Classes for ESL Students
We also offer a wide selection of core classes for ESL students which are Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) taught by teachers who have received special training and certification in teaching ESL students. The following sheltered classes are available:
Social Science:
* ESL Social Science 1-2
* SDAIE World Cultures/Area Studies
* SDAIE US History
* SDAIE American Government and Economics
Math:
* SDAIE Algebra 1
* SDAIE Geometry
* SDAIE Algebra 2
Science:
* SDAIE Integrated Science
* SDAIE Biology
Classes depend on numbers of students who apply to take them.
