New CLSD Foundation Provides Band Instruments to San Jose School

JULY 30, 2008 – The Collateral Loan and Secondhand Dealers Foundation (CLSD Foundation; 501c(3) in process) announced that it has completed its first donation of musical instruments to Lincoln High School in San Jose, CA. CLSD Foundation is a recent development by the Collateral Loan and Secondhand Dealers Association to begin a statewide outreach program to its membership in an effort to collect and then furnish needy California schools grades K-12 with quality musical instruments.

CLSDA members are encouraged to donate musical instruments in good condition as charitable contributions through the association’s foundation.

According to CLSDA Board President Robert Verhoeff, Lincoln High School was an ideal candidate for the program. “The school recently had most of its band instruments stolen and had no funds to replace them,” he said. “It was fortunate that through our foundation we were able to rally the California pawn community to provide more than 24 quality instruments to the school.”

Lincoln High is the first school in the state to receive instruments through the foundation, which utilizes an extensive network of California pawnbrokers to donate a variety of instruments to the program. Lincoln High music teacher Kate Meyer said in all of her years of teaching this is the most extraordinary thing she has ever seen. “We are very grateful to the CLSD Foundation for its efforts.”

“Pawnbrokers are the front line for receiving musical instruments and are ideally suited to be the main thrust behind the success of this innovative foundation,” Verhoeff said. “As a result, the generosity of the California pawn community comes through to help schools in need. We see this as just the beginning of what can be accomplished through this foundation.”

CLSDA plans to unveil the foundation at its Annual Convention, Sept. 12-14, 2008, in Indian Wells, CA. Attendees are encouraged to bring donations of musical instruments to the convention. The Association will also announce various drop-off locations throughout the state.

The Importance of Music Education
Respondents of a recent Harris Poll cite skills they learned in music as helping them in their careers today. Seventy-two percent of adults with music education agree that it equips people to be better team players in their career and nearly six in ten agree that music education has influenced their creative problem solving skills. Many also agree music education provides a disciplined approach to problem solving, a sense of organization and prepares someone to manage the tasks of their job more successfully
Other studies show the value of music programs to our future generations:
• Students in top quality music programs scored 22 percent higher in English and 20 percent higher in math on standardized tests mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act (University of Kansas)

• In 2006, SAT takers with coursework in music performance scored 57 points higher on the verbal portion of the test and 43 points higher on the math portion (The College Board, Profile of College-Bound Seniors National Report for 2006)

THANK YOU!!!!

Thank You to the individuals, families and organizations for your generous contribution of instruments or money.  At this point, all school and personal instruments have been replaced.  We have ordered individually locking instrument cabinets, and hope to take delivery the first week of June.  We have no leads as to the location of our instruments and have kept up to date with online sites and local dealers, pawn shops and flea markets.  The $1,000 reward is still in effect for information leading to the return of our original instruments.  It is said that times of trial bring out the best in people, and in this instance, it is certainly true.  These folks have donated of their valuable resources to share with the students of the Lincoln Band program.  I can never say ‘thank you’ enough for your generosity.  We will still gladly accept any donation you are able to make through either the Lincoln Music Boosters or Lincoln High School.
I would like to thank the following for their assistance during this time:
Starving Musician, Yamaha Musical Instruments, Wenger Corp., KFOX & Greg Kihn, Jeffrey Moore, Anthony & Dolores Ponticelli, Dale Elliot, Richard Thurman, Jane Gaylord, Joy Hart, Nate Woods, Chris Hogan, Patty Mower, Jules Schlechter, Handyhearn, Amie Embree, Vivian Griswold, Ronald Hori, Karen Rasdal, Joyce Morgan, Jennifer Herning, Lynbrook High School Instrumental Music Students, Dr. John Felder, director

Julius De La Cruz:  Scholar, Athlete, Leader

Julius came into Lincoln with a plan, balancing a dedication to academic performance with athleticism, and ultimately with leadership, both as an elected school leader and as a role model to the young men at this school.

With a 4.0 G.P.A., Julius has not shied away from the most challenging classes having taken both AP classes and Honors courses.  This rigorous course of study earned him participation in the California Scholarship Federation for over six semesters, a place on Lincoln’s Principal’s Award list, as well as a place on the Honor Roll. In addition to this commitment to academics, Julius exemplifies Lincoln’s “Do Right” creed by actively contributing to his community, working with the City of San Jose’s Parks and Recreation for more than 600 hours!

Scholarship is not the only area in which Julius excels.  Julius has played on Lincoln’s football team for his entire school career.  His athleticism and leadership on the team also earned him the Football Award as All League Lineman.  He cross trains for football by committing himself to track, having competed for 3 years.  Additionally, his senior classmates elected him as 1st Prince on Lincoln’s 65th Annual Homecoming Big Bone Royalty court.  Participation in Big Bone Royalty is an honor, as these students exemplify what is best about Lincoln students:  scholarship and quality of character.

Julius also serves as ASB Vice President and is committed to promoting school spirit by helping to shape activities and campaigns that support the diversity of Lincoln’s student population.  ASB Advisor and Assistant Principal of Activities at Lincoln describes Julius as “one of the most down to earth, thoughtful, and well-balanced young men I have had the opportunity to teach in my nine years at Lincoln.”

IEP or 504 Test Accommodations

All high school students who have accommodations through an IEP or 504 plan, and are interested in taking the PSAT, SAT, or AP Exam should contact College Board’s Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD). Accommodations are not automatically granted to students with an IEP or 504, and must go through a separate process with the SSD Department at College Board. Also keep in mind, College Board does not always accept or allow all of the accommodations given through an IEP or 504 at the high school to be transferred to the PSAT, SAT or AP Exam. Please allow at least 2 months for this process with the SSD department at College Board.
