Spanish 1/2

Dear Parent or Guardian

In Chapter 5, the students will learn how to:
• order food or a beverage at a café
• identify some food
• shop for food
• talk about activities
• talk about differences between eating habits in the United States and in the Spanish speaking world

You can help your child be successful in his or her study of Spanish even if you are not familiar with the language. Here are a few suggestions to help you help your child practice the material in this chapter.
As you prepare to do your weekly shopping, have your child write the grocery list for you in Spanish. There will likely be words that he or she does not know so this is a great opportunity for the two of you to find out together how to say those words in Spanish. If there are any items that do not have direct Spanish equivalents, use different sources such as magazine advertisements to figure out what a good substitute might be.
At some point, your child may be invited to participate in a cultural exchange in a Spanish speaking country where it is customary for guests to give a small gift to their host families. One way for your child to express his or her gratitude and share something from home is to make a gift of a small recipe book filled with favorite family and regional recipes. Work with your child to put together such a recipe book taking care to include metric conversions for ingredients as well as preparation instructions.
Feel free to plan other activities you think will help your child develop his or her language skills.
Thank you for supporting our classroom work. Feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss your child’s language education.

Sincerely,
