COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a course in Economics.  More than any other social science class, this is very practical.  You may never run for President of the United States, but you will all buy products, take out car loans and maybe play the stock market.  All of these topics are covered in this class, as well as many other topics ranging from domestic monetary policy to international trade.  In one way or another, each of these topics affect something very important to people all over the world...money!  Economics is philisophical as well as practical so there is a little for everyone.  If by the end of the semester you understand how prices are determined, the forces that shape our nation’s fiscal policy, why bank interest rates fluctuate, as well as why you never quite seem to have enough money, then we will have had a successful semester.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS: Participate in a thoughtful manner.  Come to class prepared both mentally and physically.  At this point in your lives you are all mature enough to know how to behave and what to do.  I expect your personal best!  If you fail to do your best, I will let you know.  DO NOT THINK SECOND SEMESTER OF YOUR SENIOR YEAR IS A FREE RIDE.  If you do not fulfill the course requirements, you will fail.  And, YOU ARE ALL CAPABLE OF SUCCESS!!!

COURSE OBJECTIVE: The course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to understand the following topics:
A. The Stock Market H. Labor and Employment
B. Basic Economic Concepts I. Government Revenue (taxes!!)
C. Economic Systems J. Government Spending
D. Business Organiztions K. Money and Banking
E. Supply and Demand L. Federal Reserve System
F. Prices and Decision Making M. GDP
G. Competition and Roles of Government

Bring to class each day (and I mean it!!!)

1. Notebook
2. Pens for writing; pencils for graphing
3. Graphing paper
4. Completed homework

Homework and make-up work:

1. There will be homework assignments and the occassional essay.
2. Make-up exams, assignments and homework must be completed by arrangement with me.
3. Missed assignments must be made up within the same number of days as the adsence.

Rules:

1. Rules are, there ain’t no rules!

3. All school rules apply regarding attendance and behavior policies.

Evaluation: Your grade will be based on completion and evaluation of the following:

Exams
Essays and Projects
Participation
Final Project/Presentation

Course Description: This tenth grade course focuses on the major turning points in the shaping of the world from the 18th century to the present.  Through this study, I hope you will develop a respect for the human dignity of all people and an understanding of different cultures and ways of life.  Specifically we will look at:

- The effort to replace autocratic or oppressive rule with popular government
- The development of modern democracy
- The industrial revolution and subsequent technological evoluti
- Imperialism
- World War I & World War II
- The Cold War
- The physical, geographic and economic factors reflecting and affecting these changes


Course Objectives:  The student will,

> Increase their knowledge of western and non-western civilizations
> Increase their ability to communicate in oral and written forms
> Increase their ability to gather and use historical evidence


Required Materials:

- Textbook: Contemporary’s World History
- 3 Ring Binder and dividers
- Pen and/or pencil
- Colored pencils or crayons or both


Classroom Rules:

> All school policies regarding attendance and behavior apply
> Be in your seat before the bell rings
> Food and drink are not allowed in the classroom
> Be respectful of the speaker (student and teacher)
> Respecting (not necessarily agreeing with) the opinions of other people is mandatory


Discipline Policy:

- First Consequence:  Verbal Warning
- Second Consequence:  Assignment of lunch time trash clean up
- Third Consequence:  Call Home
- Fourth Consequence:  Sent to AP of Discipline with referral

**Please note that I reserve the right to handle discipline problems as necessary


Attendance Policy:

- Students not in their seats when the bell rings will be marked tardy
- Tardy #3, and every tardy there after will result in trash duty
- Tardy #5 and every tardy there after will result in a referral to the AIM program
- Upon return from an absence, it is YOUR responsibility to get your absence card BEFORE coming to class.  Leaving class to go get it will result in a tardy or unexcused absence.
- The following are considered unexcused absences per the SJUSD Student Parent Handbook:
- 15 minutes or more late to class
- Out of town
- Suspension


Make-up Policy/Late Work:  In the case of an excused absence it is the responsibility of the student to pick up assignments missed.  Students will have the equal number of days to make-up work as the excused absence is (1 excused day = 1 extra day for make up).  Nothing can be made-up for unexcused absences. All missed assignments are expected to be made-up; there are no excused assignments.


Tests & Quizzes:

> Tests will always be announced in advance.  Missing a day before a test is NOT considered grounds for postponing a test.

> Quizzes are given often, anytime, and sometimes without warning.  They are usually short and designed to test your understanding of the reading, homework or class discussions.

> If you miss a test or quiz because of an excused absences, they must be made up by appointment within one week of the absence.  Failure to take a make-up test or quiz will result in a 0 for the assignment.

Grades: Your grade will be a direct reflection of the quality and quantity of your work.  Point values will be assigned to each assignment, project and test. 

Grades will be determined by the percentage of the total points earned:

A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60-69%
F = 59% and below
