Health Issues at Lowell and H1N1 Update

January 2010 Update:

################################################################

Success:  Fighting the H1N1 virus (swine flu) at Lowell   November 17, 2009

Lowell Elementary completed the first school-wide inoculation program in the
State of California and possibly most of the rest of the United States.

Over 200 of the 375 students were treated today and the program finished
right on schedule without any problems.  Outstanding preparations were quoted by
San Jose Unified district officials as being the key to success.

The event was covered by media crews and anchors from Channel 2, 4, 5, 7,
Telemundo, and Univision.  Lowell was featured on the evening news and
interviews were shown with Principal Jodi Lax and other staff members.

Important News About H1N1 virus (swine flu)  November 9, 2009

Update on Swine Flu preparedness   May 11, 2009

The District is working closely with the Santa Clara County Public Health Officer to keep us informed of the status of the Swine Flu and what we need to be doing to keep everyone healthy and in school. There have been a lot of questions arising about what is happening in our district. Below is a list of answers about the Swine Flu outbreak and the preventative measures we are taking in our district.

Important Points:

➢ All schools in San Jose Unified are open.

➢ We do not have any confirmed cases of students or staff who have contracted the Swine Flu.

➢ SJUSD is working closely with the County Public Health Dept. and we are following all of their recommended protocols.

➢ We will post frequent updates on the SJUSD web site and more information is available on the CDC website at http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu.

➢ In the event of a school closure, principals will be notified and parents will be notified by Parent Link.

➢ If students or staff are ill, it is recommended they stay home until well. Notify the school nurse if anyone is staying home due to a fever.

➢ Teachers and staff have been instructed how to prevent the spread of germs on school campus and are following the guidelines.

➢ There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy.
      1. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
      2. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
      3.  Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.  Germs spread that way.

➢ Contact the School Nurse if you have any questions.

➢ We will continue to work with our Public Health Department and will keep you informed if conditions change.
