Mike Cassidy

Mike Cassidy, one the Mercury New’s most beloved reporters, came to visit the children of Washington in November. He brought Kymberli Brady, author of “The Sleepy Little Star,” to talk to children about what it takes to be a writer of news stories or children’s books. Washington’s first through fifth grades sat on the cafeteria floor, questioning how it is that writers come up with such good ideas to amuse, entertain, and educate an audience.
The children were especially thrilled to receive autographed copies of Ms. Kymberli’s story, so that they too could go home and read to their brothers and sisters right before bedtime. We celebrate the kindness of these writers who so graciously shared their inspirational stories. Guess who the children of Washington would like to be when they grow up!
Brandi Chastain

This year Brandi Chastain, one of Washington’s biggest supporters, shared the stage with Tony Wragge, from the 49ers, and Leslie, Osborne, from the Gold Pride Soccer Team—as students cheered them on for Women in Sports Day. Not only did they Brandi, Tony, and Leslie share the importance of physical activity for both boys and girls, they also gave lessons in soccer and football. The children are looking forward to winning a football signed by Tony and a soccer ball signed by both Brandi and Leslie during Washington’s annual Water World Wonderful Raffle, on June 5, at 2:00
Reading Mentors:
Jesus and Quacy

Quacy
I became a reading mentor because I was fortunate to have many people who supported me while I was growing up.
But if I had had a college student to offer me advice and guide me, I know that I would have had an easier time with
school. I enjoy spending time with Jesus, because I care about what is going on in his life. I also know how important
it is for children to have a positive male role model in their lives.
Jesus
Q. makes me happy when he comes to visit me. He is nice and helps me to read. And we even do AR tests together so
that I can earn more points. I like Q!
A reading mentor helps you with reading.
Nate is good with me and I am good with him, because he helps me, and I help him.
Joel
What a good time to for picking up reading skills
and learning about folk tales and science.
And I think I have learned a few things as well.

Mrs. Sue is very nice to me, because she helps me with reading, and spellking
and reports. We wrote a report on the bald eagle: it is the national emblem of theUnited States.
Sintia
Oh, Sintia is absoltuely a delight. She is so bright
and cute and fun. Twice as smart as anyone her age.
We are reading Black Beauty.

When Ms. Melanie comes to visit we read Black about Giant Pandas,
and we learn together on the computer. I am lucky because Ms. Melanie
is friendly and she helps me with reading. We have so much fun together, and
we even went ice skaitng. I enjoy playing with her.
She is a delight, it is great to see her
to hear her read. To be an encoruagement to a child
it makes me feel good—to participate with someone
as you watch them grow up. Eager little minds!
