Rules and Policies


Absence Notification:

When absent, a student must have his/her parent or guardian call the Absence Hotline the same day he/she is absent. If the school has not been notified by the fifth (5th) day following the absence, the absence will be unexcused.  If you are calling in a child’s absence, please call the Absence Hotline directly: 265-1412.


Check Out Policy (Student Appointments):

Student appointments should be made before or after school whenever possible as to not interrupt the educational process.  If an appointment must be scheduled during the school day, please adhere to the process below:
1) Send a note requesting permission for the student to leave specifying time, date and reason.  The note must be presented to the Attendance Office prior to first period.
2) Only adults listed on the student’s emergency form may sign a student out of school early.
3) Adults must come in to the Attendance Office to sign their student in and out.
4) Verification of appointments may be required.


Lost and Found:

Lost and found items are kept in the main office behind Mrs. Dreher’s counter.  To pick up lost items, visit our school between 7:30 am and 4:00 pm.


Morning Drop Off / Afternoon Pick-Up:

Students should arrive on campus no earlier than 7:15 am.  School starts at 7:47 am.  Tuesday through Friday, students are dismissed at 2:03 pm. On those same days, students with a 7th period are dismissed at 3:01 pm.

Mondays are “Early Out” days for teacher collaboration and staff development.  On Mondays, students are released at 1:15 pm and students with a 7th period are dismissed at 2:05 pm.

It is recommended students be dropped off and picked up on Cottle Road, in front of the school.  Additionally, there is a drop off area by the staff parking lot, which can be accessed beside the preschool.


Parking:

Parents / guardians are encouraged to park in the open spaces on Cottle Road in front of the C and D wings.  Limited parking is also available in the staff parking lot, which can be accessed beside the preschool.  Also, several of our neighboring streets have available parking such as Madrona and the two streets south of Madrona.


Tardies:

Students are required to be in their assigned learning places when the bell rings. All tardies are recorded in the electronic attendance system. Consequences for the first three tardies are assigned by classroom teachers in accordance with their Classroom Discipline Plan. The fourth tardy, and all tardies thereafter, will result in a referral. Saturday School is assigned for the sixth tardy.


Visitors: 

Visitors are encouraged and welcome at WGMS.  All visitors should first check in at the main office to sign-in and pick up a visitor’s badge.

Altercations/Conflicts on Campus
Students are not to crowd around other students having an altercation or fight, and they are not to run to or follow a group of students involved in an altercation. Students who do not uphold this expectation will be given a consequence.

Campus Rules
The following are the rules/expectations for all persons at WGMS. All district and school rules are enforced at school activities on and off campus.

1.  Act with Integrity
What you do when adults are not watching is equally as important as what you do when they are!!
- Speak and act in a respectful manner, no foul language, name calling, put downs, insults, loud whistling, booing or disruptive behavior on our campus or at any school-sponsored event.
- Students are to use appropriate body language at all times - no threatening posture leering, staring, “dogging”, etc…
- Students are not to make threats of any kind to any student or staff member.
- Gambling, borrowing money, or buying, selling or trading items is prohibited.

2. Respect Personal Space
If It is not yours, don’t touch it !!
- No person is allowed to touch another person or their property. This includes touching another person’s backpack, bag or purse, clothes (pantsing), pushing, shoving, kicking, hitting, slapping, kissing, prolonged hugging, and any touching that is unwanted or unwelcome.
- School administrators have the right to inspect backpacks, briefcases, purses, etc. if they have reasonable suspicion that dangerous, inappropriate or illegal items are inside. Permanent markers are not allowed on campus.
- Students are to respect the neighborhood and stay off personal property.

3. Show School Pride
- Don’t litter, throw/dump food on others, spit or chew gum while at school or in any school area or at any school activity.
- NO food or beverages (with the exception of water) are allowed in classrooms/hallways.
- Guest teachers (substitutes) should be treated with extra consideration. A referral from a guest teacher will result in an automatic Saturday School.
- No running, skateboarding, bike riding or roller blading on campus.
- Stay out of the rain, puddles and mud, and stay off the turf when wet.
- Remain in areas that are safe and supervised.

Please note: Any extreme disruptive behavior listed in the San Jose Unified Student & Parent Handbook will result in more severe consequences than listed above and the possibility of immediate suspension without consideration of other discipline procedures . The student may be put on a behavior contract immediately upon return to school. Students may also lose activity privileges.  All behavior guidelines from the SJUSD Student and Parent Handbook will be followed at Willow Glen Middle School.  It is the student’s responsibility to read the district handbook.
