StRUT Computer Competition Team

StRUT Computer Build and Repair Team

The competition consists of four main components - the computer build, a presentation, the challenge, and a written test.

Computer Build: Working in teams of three, students confirm that their computer works, then completely disassemble and reassemble it.  Then they confirm that it still works, if it doesn’t they troubleshoot the problem and repair it.  Scoring for this component is based on problem solving, mechanics, process, and teamwork.  Points are also awarded for running a diagnostic test and the computer build time.

Presentation:  This component takes place immediately after the computer build.  Each team creates a Powerpoint type presentation which they give to the two judges who observed and scored their computer build.  Points are awarded on the ability to communicate content and knowledge, organization, use of visual aids (photos in the presentation), delivery, and teamwork.

Challenge:  This component involves a series of “bugged” computers.  The teams have to identify the problem and determine the best steps to solve it.  Possible problems include faulty sound cards, faulty monitor, no video card, etc. This component is timed.

Written Exam:  The exam consists of multiple choice, fill-in, and true/false questions, based on A+ certification content.  Tests are scored individually and also averaged as a team score.
