Cheerleading

Cheerleading is open to interested 6th, 7th and 8th graders.  The 7th and 8th grade cheerleading season lasts for ten months.  In addition to cheering football games, basketball games, and planning pep rallies, WGMS cheerleaders also compete four times a year.  They train extensively in order to develop the skills necessary to stunt and tumble competitively. 


7th & 8th GRADE TRYOUTS

Tryouts for interested 7th and 8th graders is in April before the year they want to cheer.  Cheerleaders practice twice a week during the spring and five weeks of the summer.  They also attend summer cheerleading camp at UC Santa Cruz. 


PRACTICES

Mondays from 4:30 - 6:40 pm
Wednesdays from 4:00 - 6:30 pm
Thursdays from 4:30 - 6:40 pm
At least one Saturday a month



6th GRADE CHEERLEADERS

6th grade cheer can be looked at as “Intro to Cheerleading”.  Tryouts are during September of students’ sixth grade year.  From September to November, 6th graders practice on Wednesdays from 4:00 - 6:30 pm.  After that time, they follow the same schedule at the 7th and 8th graders until mid-February when the cheer season ends.  Sixth graders perform at games and rallies with the 7th and 8th cheerleaders.

September 27 - Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk
October 11 - Great America
November 9 - Washington High School (Fremont)
November 16 - Sonoma State


RECENT NEWS

Congratulations to the WGMS Competition Cheer Squad!  They earned second place at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk competition and were invited to compete at nationals this spring.
