Under general supervision, as a Lead Telecommunications Specialist, assigns and monitors
the work of the Computer Networking and Telephone support staff. This includes
Telephone Technicians, Network Coordinators, and other staff as may be assigned under
the Telecommunications career track.
III.
Examples of Duties
Performs all the duties defined for the Telephone Technicians, Network Coordinators and
other assigned staff. Assigns and prioritizes telephone and network support requests.
Monitors work assigned to insure timelines are met as needed by departments and schools.
Helps define and document telecommunications standards and procedures. Reviews work
completed to insure adherence to defined procedures and standards. Assists and trains new
telecommunications staff members.

Distinguishing Characteristics
Persons in this position are capable of performing high level telecommunications system
design, network design and server implementation. They are able to configure
telecommunications equipment and work with outside support vendors for implementation
help and troubleshooting. They have the ability to coordinate efforts of the staff to meet
timelines. They are able to work cooperatively with other department staff to provide
training and assistance.
They have the ability to deal with difficult support situations and follow through to make
certain the issues are resolved. They have a strong customer service focus and a sense of
urgency to meet their needs.

Employment Standards
A.
Knowledge of: Data and Voice Communications Systems.
Operation/repair/installation of voice and data communications test equipment.
Network and Telephone Cabling requirements and interface technology
Effective customer service strategies.
Server operating systems.
B.
Ability to: Read and draw schematic diagrams; perform skilled shop work in the construction, maintenance and repair of telephone/data equipment; perform research and test on equipment; keep records and write reports.
Troubleshoot complex data and voice system problems. Analyze uses of telecommunications systemsand provide assistance and guidance
to help users take advantage telecommunicationssolutions.
Design to standards, install and test data and voice communications systems. Train users and support staff on effective uses of telecommunications systems. Apply effective supervision and training techniques and work cooperatively with
others; Assign, schedule and lead support staff in meeting the needs of department and
school users. Install servers and server operating systems. Work cooperatively with Systems
Programmer/Analysts who install and maintain application software.
C.
Education/Training/Experience: AA degree with emphasis in electronics or related field or equivalent combination of
training and experience in the telecommunications field which meets or exceeds the
standards of knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.
