Title

Mechanical Service Technician

II.

Definition

Under general supervision, to provide support services for the Transportation Department;
assist journeymen by performing a variety of tasks, and to do work consistent with the job
description.

III.

Examples of Duties

Receives and expedites parts and supplies for vehicles and other equipment; maintains,
verifies and transmits data regarding vehicle history files as required; verifies deliveries;
receives, marks and maintains inventory of batteries, tools and equipment for the
department; makes minor repairs to tools, equipment; picks up and delivers parts and
supplies; provides field assistance as needed; operates the service station with assigned
personnel; provides equipment shuttle as required; washes, sweeps, polishes, refuels and
performs safety checks and inspections on vehicles; keeps records; makes minor
mechanical repairs such as disassembling and adjusting brakes; performs tune-ups on light
duty vehicles, replaces starters and alternators, fuel pumps, carburetors, water pumps, belts
and hoses, and serves as a helper to mechanics in overhauling engines, front ends,
transmissions, and differentials; performs routine preventative maintenance as part of
mechanical duties such as lubrication, oil changes, transmission, differential, and cooling
system service. Will perform other duties as assigned.

Employment Standards

A.

Knowledge of:

Nomenclature and use of tools and equipment commonly found in an automotive
repair shop;

Parts of automobiles, internal combustion engines, and miscellaneous
power units;

Trade manuals and parts catalogs covering a variety of automotive
equipment;

Automotive parts storekeeping methods;

Office practices and clerical procedures involved in requisitioning,
receiving and recording supplies and equipment;

Safe driving practices;

Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code
applicable to the maintenance of vehicles in transporting school children;

Procedures involved in the repair of tools and equipment;

Service station procedures and recordkeeping;

Tools, equipment and procedures used in the general overhaul, repair
and maintenance of light, medium and heavy-duty motor vehicles and
equipment.

B.

Ability to:

Classify automotive repair parts for storage and issuance;

Exercise proper judgment in the issuance of parts, materials, and tools to
mechanics;

Perform the clerical and manual operations involved in the receipt and
storage of automotive parts, supplies and equipment;

Learn to operate a computer terminal using District programs;

Handle heavy equipment and supplies when necessary;

Keep accurate accounting records;

Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;

Meet the public tactfully and courteously and establish and maintain
cooperative and effective working relationships;

Learn the proper methods of basic vehicle servicing, safety checks and
inspections;

Perform skilled and semi-skilled vehicle repairs;

Perform miscellaneous maintenance work;

Maintain records;

Diagnose routine malfunctions and make routine mechanical repairs to a variety of
automotive equipment;

Operate equipment and use tools used in repairing or servicing of automotive
equipment.

C.

Education/Training/Experience:

Completion of twelfth grade or equivalent and three years of related
experience or any combination of education, experience and training which meets or
exceeds standards of knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

D.

Licenses/Certificates:

Valid California Driver's License.

Possession of the following valid license will be required, following
appointment, within the probationary period:Commercial Driver's
License, Class B, with "P" endorsement.
